To get a reaction out of the audience at the EA E3 press event? It doesn't have to mean anything other than it is Mass Effect.

Based on an image tweeted by BW earlier from a motion capture session, I think it is likely our antagonist will not be human. Compare the number of articulation points on the character doing the holding versus the character being held upside down. It seems as though the protagonist will be held upside down at some point by his/her main antagonist.

Maybe it is just a renegade interrupt they were capturing for ;)

My guess? We're the "untested but skilled" second in command, and our boss (Captain N7 dude) gets iced/missing/wounded early on and its up to us to prove ourselves to the crew, have sex with the crew, and SAVE THE GALAXY! Honestly I was really expecting them to push a female protagonist more heavily in the marketing this time in order to set themselves apart from Sheploo and to show off how open-minded and forward thinking Bioware is.

We're luke skywalker and they're obi-wan kenobi.

He's most likely a mentor character that either:

A. Dies in the first mission so we can take his place

B. Betrays and manipulates us for his nefarious scheme.

C. Fakes his death in the first mission and then manipulates us for his nefarious schemes incognito.

As to why they used him in the trailer, because N7 is the only thing that screams Mass Effect almost as much as Mass Effect itself.  They wanted to have something in the trailer identifiably Mass Effect besides the title card.  Same reason he uses the Carnifex.

If it happens to be B and/or C I atleast hope he's an antagonist not the main one

Question and question about the ME:A Trailer.

See, why the N7 since it's not going to be our Character? (according to BW)

Even then, why does he have companions alongside the N7?

Imagine if they are going to be the next villains now. Who says Villains can't have squadmates?

But seriously, what do you think? Any thoughts on that N7? Why the Squad with him?

Shepard confirmed! Squeeing intensifies!

I actually think the N7 is the protagonist. I really hope so because I personally would love to keep playing with another N7 character. The whole thought of a mentor or a captain who's gonna kick the bucket is kinda meh... Oh well, each to their own.

Bioware confirmed he is not the protagonist.

The N7 is obviously to draw correlations to the previous games. The N7 on the armor was the primary method for identifying Shepard in trailers, they are using it now to build hype by showing something familiar.

I see him being one of these

1 Doing a Nihlus in the first mission.

2 Something bad happens on a mission lost a lot of his men blames the Alliance and becomes a rebel.

3 Betrays his crew to the enemy and only you survive.

it was in the bioware blog post that was released during e3  here's the quote

While we aren’t ready to go into too many details just yet, as you saw in the trailer and can tell by the name, this game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy. You will play a human, male or female, though that’s actually not the character you saw in the trailer (more on that later)

Dunno, the fact that they showed snippets of what looks like actual story cutscenes (whether finalized or not isn't important) says to me this N7 character will play a role in the story. Of course they could show anybody, so it does make sense to focus on the N7 character for advertising.

1. placeholder. draw hype n7 familiar etc

2. male squadmate or other prominent char - ex the antagonist

3. major coates kinda deal a la me3 trailer

4. conrad verner for real  :P

because it's been a stand-out symbol since the very first voiced lines of the series, and has been referenced a million times.

Our character is either an N6 or an N7 recruit.  I still believe will are alliance military.
