I had a similar idea.

 

A race entirely of humanoid aliens that just so happen to look like good looking green dudes that make more good looking dudes. The older they look, the harder their abs get and it's their custom to walk around shirtless. But get this: They have a reptilian tail. And mate with their voice! So edgy. So alien. Ooh. Aah.

Create your own species, huh? Why not, it sounds fun! These dudes are actually from a fanfiction I wrote and never finished, but I liked writing about these guys, so there.

 

Sianessons (Shar-ness-ons)

 

A race of quasi-reptilomammals. Look like humans, but for the jet black scaly skin and golden eyes. They're originally from a proud warrior culture but events in their history forced them to become more brutal and totalitarian, where complete obedience to the state is expected (to the point where for example if an official orders you to shoot your kids, you shoot your kids) and free speech is liable to make you pretty much an unperson (and dead) if you say the wrong thing. Lovely people when you get to know them, though!

 

I could go into a ton of more detail, but I don't want to get into tl;dr territory. I'm known for that, apparently. Lol.

I have designed a bunch of alien races already for a kickstarter tabletop supplement. 

 

Truth be told, I was influenced by Mass Effect in some of the physiology and language used on the aliens designs for this game. Plus some really weird ones thrown i for good measure. I think I figured out a way to make an Elcor a playable character, in a sense.

 

But yeah, I can post a ton of these descriptions if you like.

Personally, I'd like to see one squadmate that is completely non-humanoid. Amorphous? Lovecraftian?

 

But barring that, if they all have to be "humanoid", then something that is truly distinct from the usual bipeds.
