Last name works for me, as long as on anything written you get the full name. None of this "Commander Shepard" written on the memorial wall nonsense.
give us a real name pls

Believable dialogue doesn't use your name very often (if ever).Because it will never get used after character creation? Tag a post-it on your monitor if you care. The rest of us want believable dialog
How often do you address people by name? I almost never do it.

Heh, I hardly ever call people by name, but that's because I'm utterly god awful at remembering their names...![]()

I do it quite a bit, actually. Though at the same time it's fairly rare for me to be addressed by my name; I'm the only one in my group of friends with a dedicated nickname.

I'll only settle for a pre-made names list if I see Ivanna Humpalot, Alotta Fagina, Blast Hardcheese and Long Dong Joe are among the names.

Blast Hardcheese
Well of course. Who else could we put our faith in?

I'd prefer a set name tbh, it's fairly meaningless what i name my character to me and all those moments when close friends and romantic interest call you "Shepard" where your first name would be more apropriate bugged the hell out of me.
A compromise would be if your companions came up with a nickname to call you for more informal moments like James.
Also about the FO4 thing, that's just for one character and i doubt they'll repeat it often, or at all. Think about it, it's 1000 names that need to fit into the emotional context of what ever the line is. That would take a long ass time to record to not make it sound out of place.

No. In the military you get referenced by your family name all the time.
Add to the fact that the game is world wide, unless you also support names like Akane, Taecyeon, Dawei, Ibrahim, Busaba, Faisal, Adisa and many more, having a fixed in game name only isolates the player from immersion in the game.
The bolded is true. Even close friends tend to refer to each other by last name. In that sense the character just being referred to by last name for ME:A's equivalent of Garrus or Wrex would work.
It is with LI dialogue that the last name being used seems unnatural and awkward. I can't imagine that people in the military who serve in the same unit, and get romantically involved, would refer to each other by last name. I know I didn't with a Navy Lieutenant that I dated briefly, though she wasn't in my unit.

I remember the game Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy had a fixed name for the protagonist, despite having multiple species and both genders to choose from. Jaden Korr (sp?) I think. I was fine with this. I don't mind being assigned a name, it does allow for the story to feel a lot more personal. Besides, it's not like we get to choose our names at birth.

Maybe in a multiplayer environment. In a single player environment you're going to be the only person with that name, so what's the harm? As long as it's gender neutral I suppose. Ultimately a name is nothing more than a reference point for your person. Doesn't mean much to me, but this clearly isn't the case for many people.

A bad idea on here every other minute. For the record I'm almost positive that in Fallout 4 only the robot and your spouse will call you by one of the 1000 first names, it's a waste of money to implement it.
If Bioware wants to take any page from Todd Howard's book, they should be looking at mods.

The Fallout system seems tedious and boring for both the programmers and voice actors. I doubt it's very fun to do every line twice for male and female but now to do them again 1000 more times? And after all that extra, and extremely boring work is done, do you think the fans will praise the system, lol no, they'll whine and complain that their names are not part of the list.
As for a set full name, I don't really see any problems with it, we will have a set last name, a title, why not go all the way and give us a first name as well. By the time I finish a run through any previous Mass Effect game, I've already forgotten what I named my character anyways since it's never brought up.
If giving us a name allows them to write better and more personal dialogue, I say go for it, but if they end up creating a first name, and rarely using it, I just don't see the point.

Note that this would reduce the cost of implementing the feature. Maybe that's how FO4 is keeping it manageable -- there are 1000 versions of every line where the PC's called by her first name, but this only happens three times in the whole game.

Do it like NWN - have the voiced dialogue skip over the name, but insert it into the subtitles.
Won't work like that. In NwN people had no option to turn the subtitles off, remember? ![]()
Other than that, all the codex entries (and even letters sometimes) normally mention the PC name (e.g. in DAI, romanced Cullen's letter to his sister). The reason behind the Memory Wall scene was about the characters limit, some names would never fit that plaque, but they could have used the initials, yeah.
The issue with a set name , well....it suck when you try to role play .
Never stopped me from loving KOTOR (hehe) and enjoying Jedi Academy (probably, the first 'open pc' action-rpg ever).
The name itself does not bind you in any way. Not more than a preset surname (Shepard, Hawke, Cousland, Lavellan etc) does, and we've had those like forever.

I found it very useful for knowing which of my Shepards was which when the sequels came out, though.

Heh that was actually the one thing I kept thinking when making my post, the name separates the saves. But I'm just assuming here, if Andromeda is gonna be more than one game with the same PC in all of them, we'll likely be using something similar to the keep, where we will likely just create each save again and again to import into future games.

it's only a name. It's not okay to referred to by a title, or family name all of the time, especially not when character creation doesn't include a choice of species. there have been plenty of social informal moments in mass effect, and everyone with a first name gets called by it at some point.
Do we actually know that character creation in MEA won't include a choice of species?

We shouldn't even have to have a surname.
