I can't quite imagine doing multiple playthroughs of a game with a PC that always has the same name. And I tend to do multiple plays of most every game I buy.

Having to choose from a limited list of names isn't much better - and for what? So an NPC might call the PC by something other than last name or title a couple of times?

No thanks.

well the mass effect icons under your name tell me you've already done it, twice.

Jos.

No, all the voice actors would just pronounce it wrong.

Believable dialogue doesn't use your name very often (if ever).

How often do you address people by name? I almost never do it.

Being the only person in a squad/party that does NOT get adressed via name is jarring, no matter what you may do in your private life. If you don't understand that, well that is BSN for you. Confirmation bias, denialism and basically every other logical fallacy one can think of.

I've played the trilogy multiple times. The PC is usually called Commander, Shepard, or both.

But each character I played had a different first name. A name I freely chose with no restrictions. In fact, that's how the files from the different playthroughs are identified - by first name.

Aside from that, I've no idea what you're talking about.

if I give my character a name then I feel like I have some ownership of said character. By being given a name we know that it's not our character.
Being restricted to human only is bad enough but given a name as well would be even worse.

I think Witcher 3 is an amazing game, but not because we're given a predefined character.
In an RPG the character should be ours, not on loan such that everyone else is also playing that exact same character.

your character didn't have a first name, your save file did. A game can have both of these things.

I didn't think expectations could get anymore unrealistic if we're talking characters speaking out the name we give our MC, and I've heard ideas about how Bioware should not make Andromeda and instead make a trilogy of games where each game in it takes place after one of the endings. I just don't think its possible. As far as we know Fallout 4 is only doing it with the robot companion.

I say if our character is a part of the Pathfinder initiative, or is in a group charged with the task of colonization just give him a vague code name. I always loved the name Pathfinder though, it sounds magical.

I'm happy with ranks and titles and surnames and nicknames like Shep and "Lola" if you wanted it etc. I think they did it pretty well for Shep tbh

I think nick names and titles are fine. Maybe one day text to speech technology will advance enough that a character named something weird like ziggurancy could be pronounced somehow. but not today.

And I think I have a name for my first character.

All Bethesda has indicated is that they've recorded a database for a single line in a single conversation.

So, no, BioWare can't.

They used the name of you and your child multiple times during the prologue, tbh.

An insider told me that the protagonists name is going to be Magnus Magnusson. For both genders.

Eh, the last-name basis thing never really bothered me, but if Bethesda can have a database of names for us to choose from that will get used in dialogue, then I'm sure Bioware is capable of the same. Whether or not they'd actually do that, no idea.

Take a moment to consider the fact that you're comparing something Bethesda does, to Bioware, which is also owned by EA.

I don't mind it...but maybe that's just because people only refer to me by my surname and various other nicknames.

The only reason to put any character's name in the dialogue is either to introduce them, or to overcome some deficiency in the presentation.

I don't want any of the characters' names spoken unnecessarily.  This isn't like a book or a play where we need to say characters' names in order to explain to the audience who's speaking to whom.  With the cinematics, that's not needed.

Look at a play with only two characters, so we always know whom is being addressed; they don't use each others' names hardly at all once the characters have been introduced.

Instead of a first name, last name, or nickname; what about a code name? For example, remember in Star Wars: The Old Republic, in the Agent class, you go under cover and give up your name for a code name. Cypher Nine.

Perhaps for impersonal dialogue, but it would be pretty weird and hilarious for a character to say "I love you, Cipher Nine."

I'd play it:

"And I love you, Deep Six."

*Renegade Interrupts. Shoots Deep Six.*

Perhaps some embarrassing codenames, like Duchess for a male, and Shiroi Kabocha for a female.

You are embarrassing yourself. And that's all I have to say. Won't bother arguing with idiots on the net. I have more interesting things to do, like watching paint dry.

A cool code-name would be Columbus and it would be very fitting with the theme of the game.

Drake from Francis Drake would be pretty neat too.

Have the female named like Cassandra in DAI. It would get tiresome saying all those names

Cassandra Allegra Portia Calogera Filomena Pentaghast

Exploration themed secret identities?  You can call me Magellan!

Seriously though. I don't think the system needs to be changed.  Shepard, Lola, Commander.  It worked fine.  And I get to know that my character has a name I picked and isn't a default Plain Jane (cwutididther?)

The only time you really use people's names in conversation is when you're trying to get someone's attention.  Sylvius makes a good point with the cinematics conveying who's being addressed during conversation.

Ultimately, I don't care how awkward it might make the dialogue sound (I concede nothing). I want to name my character. I want no part of the character's name chosen for me.

I'm going to read the dialogue rather than listen to it in any event.
