Ah Blizzard. Twas' a most wondorous spell in DAO and now in DAI, it appears to be nothing but crap, unless you are in MP.

However, theoretically speaking Blizzard should work wonders with Rift Mage. Pull of the Abyss keeps enemies locked down and Rift Mage's mana regeneration should counter the mana drain from Blizzard.

But does it actually work in practice ? I'm curious if anyone has tried this.

We all know that Rift Mage works well with Fire Mine, Ice Mine and Static Cage but no one seems to have tested Blizzard with Rift Mage.

Yes, this has actually been mentioned on here before.

I tried building Solas with this in mind, but for whatever reason it actually didn't work very well for me, even with 3-4 enemies within the template (thus generating more damage to mana, on paper). Perhaps I was trying it at too low of a level, with the base staff damage not being able to generate an effective DPS for the spell.

So Blizzard doesn't work with Rift Mage ? Its all round crap then ?

Not necessarily, just that more testing will have to be done (at least on my end) before I can say for sure. At the moment, all I can say is that, in my limited experience in testing the build, it was not very successful.

Blizzard doesn't cause Restorative Veil to kick in. It counts as a sustained, and sustains override stamina/mana regen in most instances (like Ring of Pain negating most forms of non-auto attack regen).

In short, sorry, it doesn't work as advertised.

Edit: Which isn't to say Blizzard sucks, it has its uses. It works on almost anything, including Giants (who are immune to weaken). A utility Rift Mage is served very well by taking Blizzard, it's just not really that great compared to what they can do with Immolate, and Stonefist, and Wall of Fire/Fire Mine + Pull, or low cooldown spells like their Stonefist and Chain Lightning+.

You can, with proper spacing and some time, freeze a whole battalion of enemies to be shattered, Very useful for building focus, and setting up combos for Rogues and Warriors. In the long run, there's just better options, but Blizzard as a whole isn't useless, and proper use of Ice Wall can allow for some very easy battles.

I really miss all those DO spell combinations like Storm of The Century. It was hard work to dance down all those trees to pick one of them, but they were very satisfying to use.

I ended up using blizzard on my rift mage quite a bit.  Always make sure you have weakened on the enemies though.  Where it really came into shine were battles with giants or dragons...any fight where I might take a lot of damage suddenly and go "squoooosh".  The passive for the ice armor is just super awesome, and with the weakened mana regen, you can keep blizzard going non-stop.

Blizzard becomes good with mods. I'm not sure how much people are willing to 'cheat' to make a spell worth while, but I based a character purely on the Winter tree and modded Blizzard. Still crappy damage, but I could keep it up 100% of the time, gave my mage 50% armor and created a lot of shatter combos.

So yeah, vanilla it's ****. Modded with http://www.nexusmods...tion/mods/507/?(enhanced Winter Stillness), and yeah, it's alright. Still not as good as the Storm/Inferno trees, but you don't feel like you're gimped to **** by Winter either.

I don't know about you guys, but I can keep Blizzard going forever with restorative veil. You guys either need to test better or you're missing something.

As long as I keep targets weakened, blizzard never ends for me. This is exactly how I play my elementalist rift mage build.

I do not use mods either. I play on the ps4.
