Well I thought rather than play the same ol same ol characters and combos that I'd have a change and try and wrap up some outstanding challenges at the same time.  So I picked a Batarian Sentinel and because I hardly ever use a shotgun and hundreds of mods for it, time to give it a go.  I hate the sight of blood but what a satisfying thunk as the enemies heads explode.  Picked the AT Raider coz I think it might be a tad more user friendly and they are slower than my usual Asari/Pistol or Turian/AR combos.

If anyone has useful hints/tips on builds and mods etc let me know.  I'm always keen to learn new stuff.  Tbh always been more of a bullets not powers kind of player.

Well, shotguns blow, but besides that...

- Projectile weapons don't benefit from Armour Piercing, so don't use the AP mod on the Venom, Graal or the GPS.

- Choke is huge on almost all shotguns, but it has little practical effect on the GPS or the Graal.

- The weight penalty for mods like the Omni-Blade can be avoided on most weapons by going into the kit selection screen before starting the game (re-entering the weapon selection screen will apply the penalty again.)

- Most Shotguns have a spread, but the Crusader is a hitscan weapon that fires more like a semi-auto rifle, and is effective at any range.

It's because you're new. New players hate these things. So you're a perfectly healthy human being. So nothing to see here. Let's move a long now.

PS- Shotguns are great on kits that can't dodge because doing a right dodge instead of dodging creates a very easy cancel reload. Try it with Smart Choke Claymore.

Also keep in mind the armor penalty really hits SGs hard if you don't mitigate it.

Most SGs shoot 8 'pellets' of buckshot, and EACH of the 8 suffer the 50-point penalty.  A basic SG that would normally do 900 damage pts will do only 500 vs armored foes.

The projectile-based SGs like those listed by J12LG don't suffer the penalty...which is nice.  But they also can't penetrate through cover, etc.

So unless I'm using one of these (Venom, Graal or the GPS), I will generally always use smart choke + HVB mods.  Else if I know I want to use an Omni-blade, I'll use one of these projectile SGs (mostly Graal for the Omni-blade).

And then there's the Reegar.  But since I can urinate farther than its firing range, I don't often use it.

new, new....lol,   I have +1500 hours experience with the game.  Just hate shotguns.

I think its working well on my BatSentinel as I've got shockwave/Sub net don't work so well with a full team but I am soloing at the moment to get a feel for it.

The timing is so different with the shotguns.   But I will definitely be giving these suggestions a go. Things did get a bit hairy there with the Banshee and Brute on hacks but that's what my Hurricane is for.  But you have to have balls of steel for the shotgun.

I think as well I am more used to shooting from a distance rather than up close and personal as required here.

Shotguns work on literally everything. They are the highest damaging weapon class in general and many of them can OHK humanoids rapidly. Here are some of my favourites

Claymore Quarian Female Infiltrator: http://kalence.drupa...!13W53364!50EA3

Fairly standard shotgun infiltrator and pretty simple to play. Cloak and shoot things in the face, using sabotage to stagger, strip organic shields, and prime for tech explosions. The grenades will also detonate tech combos primed by your incendiary (or disruptor/cryo) ammo, which are boosted in damage by 50% by rank 6 of sabotage, and are some of the most powerful tech explosions you can get. Claymore requires reload cancelling/ hiding to get the most of (that is, cancelling the remainder of its reload animation after the clip ejects and you have another shot ready). You can use cloak or grenades to cancel the animation, and grenades or sabotage to hide it (cast immediately after you shoot and press reload button during the animation.) You can actually use just about any shotgun on her and it will be effective.

Raider Quarian Marksman: http://kalence.drupa...!63N53314!F03AC

Under the effect of Marksman, the Raider's accuracy is increased to the point that it is basically a high power, fast firing sniper rifle. It also refills the clip so you can get off 4 shots before reloading. Use tactical scan on boss targets like Atlas mechs, Primes, Banshees, Crabs etc. Otherwise, aim for headshots because MM gives a large bonus. Works almost as well (and is easier to use) with a Piranha.

Claymore Quarian Female Engineer: http://kalence.drupa...!!13T53364!F8AE

unconventional, but surprisingly effective. Debuff targets with Cryo Blast to make them take 25% extra damage (along with crowd control) and shoot them with your gun or shatter them with incinerate. The cooldowns mesh quite well with the Claymore's ideal reload cancel window. Use the shock turret to distract, stagger and damage enemies, improving survivability. Also works well with a Wraith, though I don't like that gun, and the Crusader and Graal are a couple others I sometimes use. Raider and Piranha work but are very short ranged.

The gear/equipment is mostly my preferences. You can use whatever you prefer but I would recommend grenade gear on the QFI, and some sort of stability on the Marksman if you are on console. For mods, you should nearly always take smart choke except on the Crusader (because it fires a single bullet) Graal, GPS or Venom (because they get no benefit). Other attachment is normally either the High velocity barrel (if not using AP ammo) or the High Caliber Barrel (if using AP ammo or any of the projectile guns, like the venom, Graal or GPS).

Still new if you avoided too much this game has to offer.

And I'm not to crazy about shotguns either since I prefer accurate weapons more. Hence to me SR > then Shotguns to me too.

The Wraith is the only gun that I can do some serious damage with on platinum when using the BatSent, nothing else work as good for me.

That said the BatSent is a very mediocre kit, especially on PC due to the bugged shockwave.

I thought doing that just gave you a visual update to know what weapons were affected by the glitch or not. Don't think you have to go to kit selection to make it work. And the weight penalty isn't just for the omni blade, but the HVB as well.

Cheers for all the hints/tips etc.

I suppose so Terminator, i was jesting with you. I avoid some kits and builds because they just aren't playable on my internet which I shouldn't slag off as it only arrived a few years ago in the village. But it is slow and disconnects frequently so I have to avoid certain things else I would never stay alive.

I will certainly try some other characters and shotguns though. Have a taste for the carnage now !!

Am looking forward to ME:A. It will be brilliant, have no bugs/glitches and more importantly, a perfect ENDING....

Well we can hope.

Kit selection doesn't make it work, it actually does the opposite. If a single weight penalty has been applied, going into the kit selection screen actually guarantees that it won't work (on pre-retaliation weapons.)

I don't remember the exact factors which will cause the weight penalty to apply correctly, but I know that it can be applied to all weapons, even pre-retaliation ones. The kit selection screen effectively "resets" the weight to default, which is why doing it will remove the penalty of a single weight-applying mod.

Using more then one mod with a weight modification will always apply the correct penalties/bonuses, including to pre-retaliation weapons, regardless of what screens the player passes through before starting the game.

Its impossible to play Gold/Platinum for me I'm afraid the lag/Ping is just too great and its an exercise in frustration. plus we get frequent disconnects for no reason whatsoever. Still I can play some of the game so satisfied with that. Also I tend to PUG so I've lost too many Gold Matches at the last minute because of that. did solo Gold and got to extraction and sync-killed 20 secs before. Another time got to wave 9 and disconnected. Like I said, pure hell and too much teeth-grinding. I like to have fun when I play. THat just isn't

The Bat Sentinel seemed okay for me and the Shockwave seemed reasonable. Perhaps it only comes into play for Gold/Plat.

Have you tried a shield regain build on the batarian sentinel? I run him with the raider with incendiary ammo and use shockwave to set off explosions. What makes this build entertaining is the speed in which your shields begin to recharge.

Aside from being moderately tanky with damage resistance and strong shields, the short delay for shield regeneration also increases survivability and allows you to leisurely walk up to the enemy's face and blast them with the shotgun.

Of course, damage over time attacks be trollin'

Don't be afraid to slap shotties on asari... Claymore huntress or adept work wonders, but for maximum effect, be sure to reload cancel properly and consistently. Raider Valkyrie is more akin to force of nature, since Raider is as CQC as it gets and Valkyrie is at her most effective when she's melting enemy faces up close and personal. As for vanguard... she is a wild one. She works shotguns really well. In fact, I'm sure Mel was talking about vanguard... hot damn, she works them shotties like magic. Blowing heads left and right, throwing grenades, heavy meleeing those fuckers of engineers(because they richly deserve it, dammit!) and sending them flying...

Excuse me, I need a shower. A very cold one.

If you prefer keeping your enemies at range despite using a shotgun then the Crusader or Graal are good choices; the Crusader has zero pellet spread because it fires a single slug, and the Graal's spread is quite manageable without the smart choke.  Neither gun suffers much (or at all) from armor damage reduction.  Then put an omni-blade on them and you're good to go no matter how near or far the enemies are.  The Graal is also a reliable stagger-stick.

You did mention that your connection is laggy though, and the Graal can be quite frustrating in that case (like most projectile weapons).

Shotguns are so far and away the best weapon class in the game its not really even funny. That said, here's a few tried and true ideas-

-Put the Claymore on a Krogan

-Put an Omniblade on the Graal on a Krogan

-Put an Omniblade on the Claymore on a TRUE Krogan

-Put the Claymore on a Volus

-Put the Raider on a Batarian

-Put the Raider on the Valkyrie

-Put the Venom on literally any kit whatsoever

-I can't emphasize this enough, put the Venom on literally EVERY KIT in the game

-Put the Geth Plasma Shotgun on a Geth

-Put an Omniblade on the Geth Plasma Shotgun on your melee Geth Infiltrator

-Put the Wraith on literally any kit whatsoever

-Put the Disciple on a Krogan, then space yourself out the airlock

-Put the Reegar on a character, then take it off and use a real shotgun

That should keep you busy for a while.

Yes, because they forget to use tactical cloak agro dump dmg bonus with their weapons. Which in turn means I live longer. And that's all that matters in the end.

I would say pistols are... The Arc Pistol is the best SR/AR in the game, the Talon is the best shotgun, and the Acolyte is the best...well whatever it is.

Shotguns are damn good though.  Wraith/Venom on anything is a good place to start.

Try whatever shotgun you want coupled with Adrenaline Modules. The additional movement speed will help if/when you miss. Since you're not used to using them, I imagine there will be a steep learning curve as CQC will be new to you. Once you get used to the idea of being in an enemy's face, standing in front of them to blow their head off will become much easier. In the beginning however I expect you to die a bit.

Choose the Wraith.

Takes a bit of adjustment to the delay between the first and second shots but, with the smart choke and high-velocity barrel mods, you can deal alot of precise damage to damn near anything at mid range. Might ease the learning curve of needing to be so close to your enemies in order to shotgun.

Plus...

Wraith.
