I'm a big fan of the dragon age series. i've also completed 100% Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 multiple times even in nightmare difficulty and i consider them my favourite games. At last i decided to buy even Dragon Age Inquisition and i was very excited. Now i'm disappointed. Very disappointed. After 8 hours of gameplay i don't want to play further. Combat occurs very often and the idea of going on with it is a real pain. Let's start with the problems:

Tattics

Let's see... i want Varric to stay at range with Solas, attack multiple enemies with explosive shot. He should attack with heavy single target attacks my rogue's target, but he must concentrate his simple attacks on Solas's target. Also i want him to use caltrops if surronded by at least 2 enemies and i want my rogue to use double fangs on frozen enemies. How do i do it? I can't. I have to pause the game countless times, since skills are triggered at random. And doing this is BORING

Copy and paste from Dragon Age 2 tattics would be great.

Character controlled

No tattics, okok... Let's do it manually.

River (my character), use double fang on that enemy there..!!. Nono!! Your feet are not the enemy, you must come closer!!!

Cassandra, protect yourseft with wall of shields...!! it would be great if you face the enemy instead of givng him your back...

River, go and backstab that big guy!! River..?! Hello...?! Why are you running into his ass without attacking?!

It seems like you must be exactly in front of a big enemy to attack him. Great, all my skills works with flanking, welcome tho the fair of uselessness. Let's equip a bow instead. I can't change weapon in combat, and i don't have any secondary weapon. Wall of flesh tattic, take one instant kill and die in a fire. Don't you agree with that? Go and hide yourself in a corner and wait it's all over. Manually, of course, and don't forget to click ignore orders, or you won't be able to move your character...

Let's close the breach in the veil! Where is it..!? i can't see it the camera! Maybe from there? From this angle? After too much time i manage to click on it.. and the animation doesn't trigger... Great. Best game ever. Is it closed? Let's check... F****K that camera!!! There are many more examples, and all of them are incredibly FRUSTRATING.

Except the breach thing, all of this things are programmed to be like that. They are the correct way the game was designed to work. My dear EA don't forget that games are for entertain people and not to bore and frustrate them(rage games are an exception). It seems that your developers wanted me to select the easiest difficulty as possible and watch while my party wins the match without my guide and any strategy (you all know what kind of game this should be without me telling anything, right?)

There is no point in building such a large open world if you forget the basis and i have no reason to play a game which fills me with bore, anger and frustration. i've already paid the money for it and time for refunds it's over. Damn

(sorry for grammar and syntax, i'm not english)

No tactics is required. Combat system is pretty broken. You are better off ignoring the tac cam completely and playing the game like you would play Diablo 3.

Though I do wish we had a better tactics menu, I haven't had any issues with the combat.

I did have the issues he had, Cassandra deciding its time to run away and Varric testing his close combat abilities, etc. Over and over again. All this besides being utterly bored of the combat. Such a rainbow explosion whack fest, everyone gets to be a mage.

Haha, it's so funny to see posts like these even now, almost a year after the game was released. And the entire time, Bioware either have been too incompetent to fix the whole combat situation or they simply don't care. I think it's a bit of both - 50/50.

The combat feels very videogamey (in a bad way), in that you have to find the overpowered abilities through trial and error and spam them frequently. Barrier is a prime example. Lots of abilities don't function the way you would expect them to based on their descriptions in the level up menu, I've often tried to create character builds only to find them completely gimped based on incorrect information gleaned from ability descriptions or broken/useless mechanics. For example, builds focused on maintaining and exploiting the weaken effect don't work correctly.  I felt like the game punished me for putting an emphasis on tactics and preparation. The actual combat feels like it belongs in a game called Dragon Age: Smash Brothers. It's a bummer to see the Bioware founders leave.

Yeah, the combat is the worst part of this game.

It is tedious, then becomes absurdly easy. The only challenge are dragon fights, where you find yourself not fighting the dragon, but your own party since you have to avoid them to go melée or stand in a fire/lightning/whatever.

To enjoy it, I recommend getting good skills at the beginning, so its not so tedious. Then just gimp yourself and take fun skills and not craft. I enjoyed a lot elemental mines because they are fun, although Varric did pitiful damage with them, for example.

And also, since companions are not integrated into side quests nor main quests, go with a 3 man party. Less people, less frustration, so more fun. And you will not be missing conversations, since there are almost non-existant. (Unless you are doing their quest of course)

I plan to do this if there is a future story-focused DLC. ;)

I feel your frustration - I get especially angry (occasionally to the point of yelling out loud at the screen) when my team decide that I didn't really mean to use the "stay put" command and run around as they like. >_<

I miss having the full customisation of tactics that Origins gave me.... health pots too.

Origins was a wonderful game, it still is, actually. Inquisition is an empty shell compared to that.
