 I really like it! I sadly don't know a lot about the Gundam series (the only one I ever watched was Gundam Wing) and I had to check the wikia to know what was going on, but it was a good read, dark (or should I say realistic?) and dramatic.

Alright short version then.

 

Explanation of Universal Century Gundam or UC Gundam.

 

UC Gundam takes place in a timeline that diverges roughly a century after the second world war, at the conclusion of what they in that timeline call the common era, at the end of the common era our UN and other governing bodies basically declared a government called the Earth Federation. It set up programs for the creation of space colonies across our solar system, at the start of the universal century there plans in the initial charter declaring the purpose and mandate of the Federation for the population of these colonies once they become acclimated to space to involve them in their governance. However twenty minutes before the UC century even starts, the charter is lost in a terrorist attack on the Prime Minister's residence and the original charter despite being ratified goes missing, and that section of the founding document of the Earth Federation goes missing.

 

Fast forward a half century to the 0050s, Side Three aka the Republic of Munzo aka the future Principality of Zeon. The collection of space colonies furthest away from Earth. A radical philosopher and scholar named Zeon Zum Deikun is part of the national diet of Munzo, He's popular, brilliant and most of all touts a new ideology made up of Contolism speaking of acting in harmony with the will of the universe, and also speaking of the next phase of human evolution aka Newtypes. Deikun is beloved and rallies the Side speaking against the Federation and pressing it for its failure to allow the colonies to aid in their governing, things come to a head in 0068 when Deikun dies mysteriously...Riots break out across Side Three as people suspect the Earth Federation had one of their most vocal and popular detractors killed and a portion of its supporter faction, the Zabi family seize power. They follow up on Deikun's will and formally break away from the Earth Federation, the Federation response is brutal and swift, they impose a economic embargo hoping to starve the unruly colonists. The Republic of Munzo becomes the Principality of Zeon.

 

Zeon doesn't break though...the national politics of the Side shift, Deikun had already had a dangerous degree of control over the parliament and with his removal the Zabi's under Degwin Sodo Zabi and his son Gihren Zabi have no issue turning the Side into a fascist dictatorship...Much to the joy of the Side. For the first time in more then a half century, their rulers at their own. The Zabi family rule Side Three with a iron grip for the next decade preparing its military for war. During that time it weaponizing technology that was initially used only for colony construction, the Mobile Suit. All of Dewgin's children become part of his government, which him taking the place of the Principality's Sovereign, his eldest child Gihren taking the role of Supreme Commander of the military, his son Dozle taking the role of admiral in the military, his daughter Kycilia also becomes a admiral and his youngest son Garma graduates from their military program as a Captain. During the decade leading up to war Zeon bides its time, building up a arsenal of warships, mobile suits, tanks, fighter craft and more. And on January 3rd, 0079 Zeon unleashes its military waging a genocidal campaign of fury and vengeance. In the first week of what would be called the One Year War between the Federation and Zeon, 2.8 billion people, half of humanity roughly die due to Zeon's campaign of mass destruction to the usage of blister agents, nuclear warheads and more. Eventually their victories take them to conquering Earth itself, due to their mobile suits and superior technology they rapidly gain ground on the Federation

 

However despite their initial advantage in being only side to field Mobile Suits, the Earth's population dwarfs their own immeasurably. Their campaign bogs down months and stalemate sets in for several months only being broken in late September. When the Earth Federation's own mobile weapon project-The Gundam is discovered by Zeon, the prototype Mobile Suit sets off a crisis in Side Seven and flees the colonies and defeating several Zeon task forces eventually makes its way to Earth,  there it becomes a critical part of the Federation forces, and its valuable data leads to mass production of lesser variants of the Gundam months later. With the noose tightening around Zeon's forces on Earth, pressure to land a decisive blow leads to the death of Garma Zabi who was the commander of the Zeon forces conquering North America, he dies as the result of vicious internal politics.

 

Gihren rallies the people of Zeon after the loss of his youngest sibling and a veteran soldier named Ramba Ral is dispatched to eliminate the Gundam and carrier ship that holds it and the other prototype mobile suits. Unfortunately Ramba Ral is overcome and defeated despite his legendary skil, the writing was beginning to become clear upon the wall as Zeon was pushed back in a dozen places in preperation for the Federation mass attack in Odessa Ukraine which saw Zeon defeated and sent into a retreat across Europe, and was one of the final nails in the coffin of the Zeon occupation of Earth. 

 

However Zeon wasn't defeated and planned a all or or nothing gamble on finally capturing or destroying the Federation main base in South America-Jaburo. It launched a all out invasion of the hidden command base and factory, and waged a bloody invasion, but ultimately its forces just didn't have the firepower or numbers by this point to break through, as the Federation by this point was using their own mass produced Mobile Suits to counter theirs. Which lead to the next stage of the One Year War. Operation Star One, the planned invasion of the Zeonic homeland by the Federation, to defeat Side three first you would need to take the massive fortress factories carved out of asteroids that marked the rings of their territory, Solomon the first factory was on the very border of Side Three, and its larger cousin-A Baoa Qu was the final defensive line before Side Three itself, before you reached the home colonies of Zeon.

 

On Christmas day itself 0079- The Federation attacks Solomon, despite its massive garrison of forces, despite its naval might, the fortress falls in under a day as does it commander, Admiral Dozle Zabi. Two of his children lost, and the Federation on his very doorstep, Sovereign Degwin Zabi meets in secret with the Federation after Solomon, Gihren seeing this as a valuable oppunity to drastically weaken the Federation unleashes the latest Zeon super weapon-The Solar Ray or Colony Laser, a massive laser cannon made out of a hollowed out colony shell, firing a massive beam of light that overshadows the sun itself, it carves through the amassed Federation fleet at Solomon, and Sovereign Degwin's own fleet. Gihren Zabi seizes command of his father's throne, and prepares for the inevitable assault on Zeon, rallying his remaining forces to the final fortress at A Baoa Qu.

 

That was to be the largest battle of the war, despite their massive losses, roughly a half of what had been assembled at Solomon-the Federation fleet and mobile suit force, easily dwarfs their Zeon counterparts. For hours the Federation assaults Zeon's seemingly unbreakable lines, Gihren himself is directing the battle from the command room, his strategic genius allowing him to easily counter whatever ploy the Federation employs, and then his sister and the sole surviving Zabi save Dozle's infant daughter Mineva arrives at the fortress. Accusing Gihren of patricide she strikes down the Zeon dictator and assumes command of A Baoa Qu herself. However she underestimated Gihren's popularity with the military and two Fleets of veteran soldiers, ships and mobile suits leave A Baoa Qu leaving one of their flanks open to collapse, which it does ultimately. A Baoa Qu is besieged, its once impregnable lines now crumbling across the field, Kycilia attempts to abandon the fortress only to be killed, With the Zabi family save one member dead...a official from the Zabi government declares a ceasefire, as terms of Zeon's surrender are decided, and the One Year War ends on December 31st 0079.

 

But that is just the beginning truth be told, I told you of the infant Zabi? Of the Fleet that fled Side Three after Kycilia killed their beloved little dictator? These and many other stories await to be told, Zeon would continue to fight, and fight and fight, for years onward in one form or another. Because for all the faults of the Zabi dictatorship? They were at the very least, their own people at the end of the day.
