Just because you have a jump button does not mean your game is a Platformer

I was hoping they would not even give us a jump button in the next ME considering what they did with it in DAI. But now that that ship has sailed, I would at least hope that they recognize that just because you have a jump button does not mean their game has suddenly morphed into a platformer. I despise the "make 10 perfect hops to reach some worthless loot" sections of DAI. Assassins Creed is a platformer because it has the game mechanics to make it one, not because it has a jump button. Ezio can walk along a narrow beam because the game was designed so that he would not fall off, not because the designers relied on players to negotiate a 2 pixel wide path with perfect accuracy on a controller where that is very, very difficult. (The same could be said of the blasting caps section of Bring Down the Sky which I absolutely loathe.)

Please, do not go crazy with your level design just because you have a jump button there. The last thing I want to see is any more Shards type quests.

Yeah, it was annoying to have to hop up things to get to some of the shards, but 1) usually I found there was an easier way to do it than what I was trying with all my jumping about and 2) they're totally optional.  It's not a plot mandatory quest at all.  If you don't like the shards, don't collect them.  I've totally left them alone in some playthroughs because I don't want to bother.

On the whole, I think the jump button is nice.  It gives the option of more variety in environments.  The JoH expansion has some very nice vertical structure in the Frostback Basin that makes it a more fun area to play.

Since there are propulsion packs for the new N7, I assume they're goin' to make us abuse it to get up to stupidly tedious areas. New areas and HUBs do not always mean well, and even more so with a jump button.

Bonus points if the omnibutton makes a return.

Jump, use, take cover, all in one

I would happily take Shard type quests if it was a platformer.. or some adventurer hybrid. Like Tomb Raider. Not AC. Imagine if every desolate planet world had an obstacle course like that. I wouldn't complain at all. That's better than ME1.

But it won't happen.

If an iPod can do it, a button can as well.  ^_^

I agree on the shards thing and the "perfect hops and (nearly) worthless loot" thing, I hope however that they allow us to use the terrain to our advantage (hell, I am hoping for missions where you have to defend objectives, like say a vault while a companion cracks it, and that you can place turrets etc.), like using that jump-pack (it's not a real jetpack, as it does not sustain flight, it just gives you a short boost) to hop on a large rock or a wall or a boulder (and lay down on it, so that you don't get hit that easily) to snipe (or otherwise attack) from high ground!

greetings LAX

If the propulsion packs make exploration easy and fun then it won't be a problem if it's done a few times. Having it done often though would be tedious if it's just to collect some item or activate something.

ME1 had more "platforming" than ME2 and ME3.  At least in ME1, I can get on top of crates to gain an advantage in battle.

The one in the hinterlands, on one of those big spiky, spire like stones one the way to the Ferelden Frostback's lair.

I had to ask for help with it, because I could not comprehend that the game actually intended that I would need to waste five minutes trying to balance and hop my way up to it, in order to get it. I thought that there must be an operation that led to small bridges being built between the stones and the nearby cliff.

"Platforming" up that thing was ridiculous. I agree, I hope they don't do that again.

as long as the jump can get distance, the hop in DAI is up, and down, and you really can't get anywhere with it regardless of what you do, if the jump can cover enough ground to allow platforming areas to be large and able to move around some what, rather than tall, finicky spires with inch wide ledges it could be useful. The jump in DAI is not for platforming, it is for getting unstuck, and trying to platform with it is painful.

I am legit worried about the 'jump' jet pack.  If they do the same thing they did in DAI I'll go into rage mode.

Build terrain and put things up on terrain that you can't quite get to, let you jump up a few levels high but then laugh and do not let you jump up to the level you need to be at to get your item, go back down and around the base of some mountain and try again.

I didn't realize so many people hated that they added jumping in DAI and how it was implemented. I barely even noticed it, in the sense that it just felt like a natural thing that was there instead of sticking out like a sore thumb.

I honestly just assumed he was doing that charge move that the rocket turians had in ME3 multiplayer.

I think it's less the jumping itself, and more the fact they put things in places that require really precise jumping. Often, if you miss by a toe, the Inquisitor flails around and slides off, making you start from the bottom again. More annoyingly, I find if they're jumping next to something solid (like a wall), the Inky suddenly jumps backwards half a mile from the wall.  -_-

It was even worse for PC gamers who didn't have a walk toggle and could only run. One of many reason I won't play DA:I again.

The only thing that really sucks about it is that you might create disparity in gameplay between pc and consoles and practically force pc users to use controllers to make certain jumps.

Well, they patched in the walk eventually. Only took them several months. :P
