In SWTOR if you haven't played it, not only does gear (obviously) affect the healing/damage/tanking of your companion so does their affection towards you.

Do you think in a game like this, if you do loyalty missions (kind of like what was described in the leak), you gain loyalty points that can eventually be maxed out that can make your squadmate more effective in battle?

Uh, wow.  I didn't know they did that.

That sounds like an interesting, and possibly awesome, idea.  Just as long as our squad members aren't nigh-unusable if we choose not to do loyalty missions.  I mean, they're missions, and I've always been a completionist when it comes to Bioware games, so I'd definitely do all of them, but I'm aware that some people won't (for various reasons, usually due to RPing their character that way).

In SWTOR they are still effective and usuable.  However, with maxed out affection, they are slightly better.  It's not a game changer if you don't max out their affect or if you do.

That's the idea with this game, if you decide not to max it out, they won't be useless sacks of crap.

wouldn't that lock you though in a Paragon only ? if peoples want more diversity between renegade and paragon , Swtor style would mean you are stuck with one alignement . Go and max all affection and they are badass . neglect and..you get squat .

Bad idea. Then certain convo paths become 'the best' as they buff your companions. No thanks.

Idea sounds ridiculous in any game to be honest with you. Not surprised its in a Bioware game. :)

DA2 had your companions getting an extra buff if you had high friendship or rivalry with them. Always felt a bit too gamey to me,

I don't really like this system in Kotor, Swtor and Dragon Age. Bribing companions with gifts to gain their favor... blergh. That's not how relationship works.

What I like was having an option to treat each companions differently. Like having an option to be a lover, friend, frenemy, or being professional. Maybe there's some perks but I don't like it when you have to curry favors with them.

No. The way you act should affect their loyalty towards you. Let's not have a return to Origin's material girls/guys. As for whether it should make your squad mates more effective in battle, that's an interesting one because I was thinking along similar lines last night but in regards to morale. The way you act affecting morale having an effect on crew performance. I guess the higher your loyalty the higher your morale would be so the two things would work well together.

Look, buying Lord Scourge presents so that he'd forget that my Jedi was a total lightside square and actually be useful for freaking companion quests instead of failing every #*$^#@in' time?

Not the brightest star in my gaming career's sky.

That's how it works in Real Life too. I don't talk to People I don't like if I don't have to.

True; but like and mutual respect aren't inclusive or exclusive to each other.

The companions in DAI are pretty damn petty.

They gripe the entire time if you don't buy into their own perspective..
In ALL things.

How about it being a two way street Solas? Huh? No? Fine, I'll punch you in the face then.

"Be nice to me or we won't talk?"

That beats the alternative, which is squadmates worshiping the protagonist even if he/she treats them like garbage or does things that they should be deeply outraged by.

Yup, I hated how I can treat my companions like dookie in ME and they still loved me.

If you kill people for no good reason, lie or treat companions like dirt, their unwillingness to speak with you, or even stick around to be part of your team, is fairly understandable. In ME2, Jack would have been prime material to have an approval system. If Shepard lied to her about giving her Cerberus info, that should've been a penalty right there. Do things like that enough times, and bam, lower engineering is suddenly vacant the next time you land on the Citadel. I would have very much preferred such a system. Reactive companions are more interesting.

And reactive in this sense is gimping playing style for the game to resemble a popularity contest.

I can get Tali's suicide if you obliterate her people, that reactivity I understand and approve of.

But talking to me like your a deranged teenager with no sense of tact because I did things you don't approve, despite having done other things you approved of in the past isn't reactivity.

Its limitation.

Well, personally I'm hoping the next batch isn't a gaggle of sidlers that love or worship the PC nigh unconditionally.

I'd much rather have certain limitations based on the characters' own scripted sensibilities than just going along with everything because whatever. Heck, with Tali, she should've tried to destroy legion/geth vi or even turn on Shepard to stop them from potentially leading her people into extinction.

I get that.

I just think the DA approach is the wrong one.

I kind of like the idea, but as stated earlier, limiting to just a "high" approval is...well limiting. DA2 did have friendship/rivalry (which would have worked MUCH better in DA:I because the world is at stake and thus it would make more sense for people to stay in your group), but it did feel a bit gamey.

What I would like to see is something akin to Heavy Rain, where in some intances, you can fail a "mission" and the game continues anyway. These failures could affect morale for the crew, and in turn affect their battle capabilities. Also, conversations and such could be more like an "extra credit" bump.

Perhaps, but it makes a great deal more sense in and out of gameplay than ME2's loyalty system. Like, when Isabela returns with the book, she had every reason to just keep running and never look back, but outside of the friendship/rivalry mechanic you can easily make sense of her choice to return.

I don't care about bonuses so much as Loyalty indicates there'd be stronger focus on character based stories, like ME2. That's all I really want.

I don't care about their main plots that much... because they aren't that great anyways. Frankly, they f*cking suck.  It's just something I slog through. Characters, however, and general world building? This they do well.
