Right now I'm using BattleMaster armor on my mage because it provides me 14% protection for Fire, Electric and Cold along with 6% for Melee and Range, +12 Con and Might and the defense is 278 I believe. The armor has other stats that I cannot think of off hand, but I'm curious; are there any better armors in this game for a Mage? I may purchase the Superior BattleMaster Mail and create a new set for a higher defense.

I'm a Knight Enchanter with a staff that does Mind ability, so I'm rarely worried about damage to myself. Cole has a similar armor on him right now as well as does Sola.

I do not own the DLC currently. I just own the standard game ATM.

I think the best armor for anyone is a tier-3 Superior Battlemaster Mail.  For warriors, make it out of dragon bone or veil quartz.  For other classes to use it, make it out of silverite.

My reason is that health is the top defensive stat in the game.  For example, double the health is equivalent to 50% resistances (all 4 of them), defenses (all 3 of them) and armor boost.  This extends to max guard, which is 25% of health (before warrior-related bonuses--and guard is granted to mages via fade touched silverite or obsidian).  Warrior armor and its arms/legs attachments can boost health tremendously, and this mail allocates 10 metal to health boost.

Edit:  One thing I glossed over is that part of the health boosts come from constitution boosts via the arms/legs attachments.  My Qunari KE gets +32 constitution from her T3 heavy-armor attachments, which works out to +160 health, on top of the direct health increases from both armor and attachments.  That also boosts melee defense, which works well for a KE.  (Add the Qunari natural defense, and she ends up with 56% melee defense.  Hell of a tank, for a mage.)

He said mage armor.

Anyway, you have the black emporium? Because that sells 2 of the best tier-3 armor schematics in the game, with the Hissing Wastes merchant selling the 3rd one (sturdy battlemage armor, study battlemage coat, sturdy battlemage mail). Even better if you can get the "superior" versions via certain inquisition perks, specifically the "short list" perk.

This link will serve well-

http://dragonage3.wi....com/Schematics

I know it says 2 of the best armors are random drops, but that page was made before the black emporium became available. Trust me, they can be bought. However, the 2 that show up there only become available at level 16. The hissing wastes one is available the moment you can get the to merchant.

If you really want to use warrior armor with certain rare materials, go ahead. My post still applies, the merchants mentioned in my post here sell all 3 class's variants.

Yeah, but it's uglier than sin, unless I am getting mail <> armor confused, which is entirely possible.

I know what he said.  Crafting warrior armors out of silverite makes them available to all classes, including mages--and as I said, I think the T3 Superior Battlemaster Mail is the best armor for anyone, including mages.

Okay yeah, I had them mixed up.  The mail is the ugly one.  Armor isn't bad, but coat looks best of the three.

I know. I edited. As I said in the edit, the best warrior armor is found with the exact same merchants the best mage armor is.

The Hakkon DLC has Refined versions which provide different stats over the Superior ones. Also Armor of the Dragon Hunter schematics are available post-DLC-story. So if you do Hakkon ASAP, survivable around level 17, then you'd have the highest rated gear for the rest of the game.

Side Note: You can be around level 17 just by completing Hinterlands, Fallow, Storm Coast, Haven and then Crestwood. Which leaves all of Orlais to play after then doing Hakkon.

Too bad the coat is glitched. On my human female, it had a glitch where part of the coat would literally stretch out with every step, looked really stupid. My elf female, one of the buttons would float away from where it should and would float around in front of the coat when when walking. My qunari was the only one who didn't have their coat glitch.

The coat does look better.  No argument there.

The highest amor rating or melee defense doesn't mean it's the best armor for MAGES. Remember, a Mage is ideally supposed to be kept out of the front lines, so stats like armor rating or melee defense are almost irrelevant. You want armors that support stats that support Mage tatics, such as;

-Increased Magic or Willpower attributes

-Increased Ranged Defense

-Increased Magic Defense

-Increased Health

-Increased Fire, Cold, Electric, or Spirit Resistance

That said, I personally feel Sturdy Battlemage Armor is the best armor for Mages in the game. Its emphasis is on utility (increased Magic or Willpower), Ranged Defense, and Magic Defense. All VERY valuable assets to a Mage. Like others have mentioned, this is available in the Hissing Wastes with the Dog Merchant. If you don't have the short list perk, you can buy a non-sturdy version of the schematic at the same shop.

The only way I can really justify using Warrior armor with an emphasis on armor rating or melee defense on a Mage is if you're a Knight Enchanter who frequently plays on the front lines. Otherwise, totally unnecessary when considering the roles of Mages on the battlefield.

Best Mage Armor?  Knight Enchanter?

Any superior t3-t4 armor with a Fade-touched materials that provide 5 Guard on Hit and 1% Health on Hit in armor and staff.  Aim for melee/ranged/magic defense for toughness and willpower for offense.  Based on JoH play, assasins and archers hit the hardest if I remember correctly.  So I expect that to be the case in future DLC.  Doesn't really matter if it's optimal stats though, JoH or not.  Just make sure you have the guard/health heal per hit (Fade-touched Silverite and Snowfleur will do).  Take Energy Barrage and use it on recharge between everything else.  Never die... and hardly ever die in JoH. :P

I never thought that I would miss mage robes as much as I have in Inquisition. That the devs chose to have unisex be their primary design tool this time out is just one of the many dumb ideas that should have gotten shot down very early in their planning phase.

Right now I am using the BattleMaster armor for my rogues, warriors, and mages. I believe the armor rating for my rogue and mages are 278 or so and for the warrior is 300+.

Since I'm a Knight Enchanter I'm actually wearing the formal wear. Enjoying the look of it.

I do have to say that crafting seems way better than the gear you get. I'm not sure if I like that or not. I enjoyed how DAO where best gear was found, magical or sorts. Not the best gear was made, well actually the Dragon Scale armors were the best but those required Wade.

If you don't have Jaws of Hakkon then it is Superior Battlemage Armor. It's Utility slots you're looking for, not Defense. Trust me.

I would argue... Maybe. Offense slots seem to be the best, to me. How can you not love an extra 40% to your damage via attack boosts? There is an argument to be made for just becoming do damaging that nothing lasts long enough to hurt you much, like handling ME2's insanity difficulty (where no amount of extra shields or health was going to help more than extra damage). Not to mention things like "heal on kill" which will make you not need healing potions as much as long as you keep killing quick, armor penetration which is like attack in that a lot of it can help you kill quicker, or critical chance which is excellent for constantly activating flash point.

As I Knight Enchanter I prefer increased damage over heal on kill, since KEs can generate barrier by doing damage. Since I play my KE as a frontline fighter, I prioritise melee defense on my armour (melee defense caps at 80%). Best melee defense options are tier 3 warrior mail with the mail arms and legs.

Of course, but the offense slot on armor allows both damage increase and heal on kill. Either way it's using an offense slot. My point was that utility slots aren't the end-all be-all for a mage.

For mages i belive the prowler armor sets with utility slots are the best . Invest in cunning and dex and you are golden.  Aim for maybe 35-40% crit chance and 160%+ crit dmg. Add a nice fade touched dawnstone for health regen. As a knight enchanter you shouldnt really have any probs whatsoever on the highest difficulties, even when soloiing. Install the black emporium dlc for a not the best, but almost, staff of corruption schematic.

My Knight Enchanter wears Superior Battlemage Armor focused on Utility Slots from armor and headgear for magic and willpower, which becomes more Attack% and +5 guard on hit in the Masterwork Slot. The Staff of Corruption I used is spec'd for Attack% and Flanking Damage using the Offence Slots, and Chance for Hidden Blades on Hit in the Masterwork slot. For even more power I chug an upgraded Lyrium Potion for 60 more points of Magic, which becomes 30 Attack%.

That's just what I like though. I think we all agree there's a lot of ways to get the most out of your KE.

I thought he was actually talking about weapons, but I looked at what post he was replying too and realized I was wrong.
