http://www.eurogamer...onfederate-flag

When Wal-Mart decided to stop stocking the confederate flag, I shrugged, and thought it was sort of a silly reaction to the recent shooting that occurred in South Carolina and was just a stupid reaction on the part of Wal-Mart. That said, I disagreed, and continue to disagree with those who said that Wal-Mart was or is infringing upon their Constitutional rights... because those people are stupid. I told them that they are making a big deal out of nothing and that if they really were that upset with Wal-Mart's decision, that they should exercise the (allegedly) last remaining right they have and to shop elsewhere.

So, along comes Apple. In an attempt to distance their company from this murderer's motivations, they come up with the brilliant idea of removing every game that has a confederate flag in it.. Even games that are using the flag in a historical context, such as American Civil War titles, were censored and removed from the App Store. The developers of those games were then told by Apple that they would have to change the flag (no joke) or that the game would not be allowed back onto the digital store. Since then, Apple has revised this policy a bit and has said that games using the flag in a historical context would not face the wrath of censorship anymore. Lets all thank Apple for small mercies.

The most hilarious part of this whole thing is that while the Civil War games were being pulled from the store, World War 2 games that featured the flag of Nazi Germany were left alone. Now, if this guy's motivations had been driven by Adolf Hitler, I imagine it would have been the other way around and my topic here would be a little different.

It begs the obvious question people should be asking themselves but are not: Why are we letting the actions of one random person who commits a vile and disgusting act affect us all so much? What we should be doing is punishing the man for his crimes and not censoring history because it's inconvenient to a company's manufactured image.

History. In Germany, everything that even remotely resembles Nazism is banned and can get you jailed, as far as I'm aware.

The same should've happened to the Confederate flag decades ago.

Hell, before WWII even.

I hate these overreactions, but I can't say I'm surprised. Censoring history won't accomplish anything, except making people more ignorant of history.

Then go to Germany and stay there if that's the kind of society you wish to live in. I prefer living in a country where freedom of expression is celebrated.

But the war between Dixies and Yankees was like the war between Yellow Roses and White Roses in England.

Why? Because it's offensive? Germany's ban on Nazi symbology outside of historical contexts hasn't stopped hate. There are still far right parties there that spew Nazi rhetoric. Banning the Confederate flag won't do anything, except driving these people underground and possibly turning them into a more focused threat.

Over-reaction much?

Comparing the Confederacy to the Third Reich is beyond ridiculous.

It has no use to ban it anymore. It should've been banned directly after the civil war.

Better sweep those nasty bits from the past under the carpet to score brownie points with the public. There's no better illustration of how misguided the PC nutjobs have become.

Still wouldn't have done anything. What most people think of as the Confederate flag is actually a battle flag used by the Army of Northern Virginia, among others. Not the national flag. It probably would have been forgotten if it weren't for the KKK's revival in the late 1910s and early 1920s.

I don't live over there, so i don't know how big a deal this actually is. But why would you use that flag? First of all it was not the original design for the Confederate flag was it? It has just become a symbol of it the last 150 years. I am from Norway and we were in "union" with Denmark and Sweden for about 500 years, and i would never fly one of their flags just because it is part of our history. We have a flag (red, white and blue), just like the US has the Stars and Stripes. I guess i don't see the issue. Is it censorship to remove a flag that was on the losing side of the most bloody war in American history?

Displaying a flag in or outside your home should never be against the law.

I don't own a confederate flag nor do I have the desire to fly one inside or outside my home. That said, I live in the United States, we value our freedom of speech and freedom of expression that is guaranteed to us by our constitution. If my neighbor wishes to fly a particular flag, I support his right to do so even if I don't like the flag or what it represents. Yes, it is still censorship to remove games from a store just because they include something a company or person may find offensive.

I disagree. Millions of people have died to combat the ideologies those flags (Nazi and Confederate) represent. Ban them. Jail everyone who uses them.

It's because the Southerners were totally screwed by the Union after the war and flying the battle flag is their way of saying screw you to Washington or some other prideful thing.

I don't know, I live in the North.

They're not that far apart. One was founded in defence of a reprehensible institution that was a clear crime against humanity and obvious genocide. The other was founded to perpetrate crimes against humanity and orchestrated a genocide. The difference is basically one of degree.

Meh its a free country Apple can censor whatever it wants from their app store. Even if said censorship is the result of an overreaction/ pr move. I live in Oklahoma and there are rebel flags everywhere. Pretty much the only people who have them are clueless teenagers trying not to be "mainstream" and ignorant rednecks. I'm all for keeping the flag it makes it easier to identify the idiots.

When you try to remove a politically charged symbol from a work of art depicting historical events where said symbol was used, it is censorship.

Apple has the right to block the games, but if these games are simply using the flag in its historical context as a battle flag of the confederacy during a game set in the American Civil War, I think it is an insult to gamer's intelligence to assume such representation would offend us or cause us to hate others.

That's like flying the Nazi flag to protest the communist and American occupation of Berlin.

You have more in common with the Third Reich than you realize.
