I didn't know quest = bad. There were many complaints about a lot of things, but I don't recall much complaining about Cassandra beyond her appearance. So like, is it problematic simply because it's a quest, or because the quest itself is bad?

Quest=/=bad.  but the quest should feel organic, like a logical extension of the relationship development.  As opposed to "I won't sleep with you until you bring me X"

For all that people mock the Josephine romance's lack of boobs, she had a pretty cool romance quest.

Still, it beats "hit the heart icon enough for sexytimes"

Never got the issue with how Cassandra looks.

gO5GngM.jpg

If anything she looks more real than most Bioware characters.

I could go on for quite a long post about the insult to journalism that business was but I'll leave it short and yank informationt: Fox News featured a segment in which it was claimed that the first Mass Effect game featured full nudity and the ability for players to engage in full graphic sex.

Cooper Lawrence came with claims such as that the player character of the game was a man who decided how many women he wanted to be with. When asked by video game journalist Geoff Keighley whether or not she had played the game, she replied that she had not. Cooper Lawrence would later retract her statement after watching someone play the game for about two-and-a-half hours and added that she had been told the game was similar to pornography.

EA requested a correction of "serious errors" from Fox in an open letter and people from the gaming community expressed their criticism of the accusations, some of which did it by leaving poor reviews on one of Cooper Lawrence's books citing things such as that although they had not read it, they had heard it was bad.

Bioware would go on to show increasingly more sexual content in each of their games with the latest in the Dragon Age series featuring  backsides, breasts and more.

If I recall, Australia tried to ban ME1. Because nothing says nanny state like censoring games for adults...

To be fair, Australia is weird about a lot of things. Do they even have an M rating category yet?

I would hesitate to call the ME1 situation a "storm" of any kind. It was a couple of idiot blogs that led to a quick, equally idiotic bit on Fox News. It was all very quickly forgotten.

I was just going to say "Fox news: Confirming American stereotypes since 1996" but then again I read that.

I miss the days when it was just the far right media like FOX News that didn't do any research or just made stuff up. Now it's everyone pulling that crap. Maybe it always was, and I just wasn't paying attention...

I don't remember anything about that, and a halfhearted attempt at googling it didn't find anything.

R18+ was added a couple of years back.

I would say they pretty much always did. But increased connectivity through the internet let's you debunk a lot of that stuff. Imagine something like that without the internet, then people wouldn't buy the game or whatever to see if it's true and just take their word for it.

You know you realize as you grow older there are alot of stuff you didn't previously pay attention to, would be a nice trope to throw in the game lol. How we pay attention to more stuff as we grow older than we actually did when we were younger.

Yeah, because the internet is positively full of calm, well researched arguments.

The internet while full of potential has allowed stupidity to spread like wildfire.

Sure but if you search for specifics like that you can mostly use it.

Except by people who keep shouting FOX NEWS! whenever anyone expresses an opinion against nudity in a video game...

I don't know, it's just something I read about. International exposure to such topics is usually minimal.

To anyone outside these forums, that Fox News report barely registered.  It was a nonstory that was neither noticed nor cared about.

To some here, though, it's a rallying cry for more T&A

Well, Singapore banned Mass Effect. As a concerned neighbour with even more weird government-funded censors, I was quite impressed that they were that against Liaramancers.

That isn't entirely true. The controversy became a big story in the gaming press. It may not have registered with people who don't care about video games one way or the other, but it wasn't something that was just relevant to Mass Effect fans.

It also probably registered with a certain crowd of a certain age who legitimately think that video games are responsible for a host of social ills. The report was playing to the fears of an audience that was middle-aged, socially conservative, often religious and interested in moral issues, and unfamiliar with the product being discussed.

The nudity part isn't important to me one way or another. I kind of just shrug at people making a big thing about it on either side of the argument. Maybe I'm getting too old.

The important part is the story, the characters the Connections.

Maybe they should put a breastfeeding mother in the next game. That's what breasts are for anyway.

Amusingly, there was an article done by a Kevin McCullough, I believe, that featured even more outrageous accusations such as: "Mass Effect can be customized to sodomise whatever, whomever, however, the game player wishes".

This fared about as well with the gaming community from what I can understand and Jack Thompson apparently even said this about the controversy: "The guy who shot his mouth off about it had no idea what the Hell he was talking about. This contrieved controversy is absolutely ridiculous"

McCullough issued an apology to the gaming community but maintained that the content in Mass Effect was still offensive.
