I agree that some measure of control should be given to the players.
Control for players is always good, but that's not really the issue.
In the end developers have to choose, they can make a game that appeals to a large audience, they can make a game
that appeals to a small audience, or they can try to appease everyone and fall flat on their faces. (or at best end up with something mediocre)
The fact is that those oversensitive souls that campaign here all the time for the censorship of everything "naughty", "inappropriate", or not politically correct, are a very small minority with a particular taste in entertainment that is simply not shared by most consumers of video games.
It's simply easier to write a good story or make a good video game when you do not have to worry about being appropriate for children.
Just go with the flow, write a good story and let it carry you with it, and should the nature of the story demand sex drugs and rock&roll?
Sure, no problem, adult rated video games are not made for nuns nor children.
