I thought it would be interesting if the Soldier class didn't actually have much in the way of abilities (aside from stuff like Grenades and Rockets), and had to mostly play the combat just using the gunplay and tactical sense. Going further than that, I think one way to really diversify the classes would be to move away from the idea that each class has to have something like 8 abilities and the class choice just changes what set of abilities you get. In the Soldier's case they are just the gun class, and the fun of the class stems from just having access to more weapons.

I never realized how much I like the ME1 gun training system until it was removed. I really like the idea of training with certain weapons (assigning points) in order to use them effectively. So like you said the Soldier should be able to train deeper into every weapon type and at some deep level even gain the use of unique weapons which require extra training (more points than any other class is allowed to spend). So like an Engineer can choose to be good with general sniper rifle models, but a Soldier can choose to specialize so much that he learns how to use the best of the best.

Really?
Ever compare a CSMG 1 to a CSMG 10?
