Just decided to start ME1 again on Insanity as a Sentinel ... it'll be the 4th play-through I think, though the first for a very, very long time. I've never completed it on insanity before, nor with a Sentinel....

... now I know why; no Tech Armour and I'm getting horribly ganked even on the MSV Ontario mission right near the start. Combat now seems really stilted and Singularity floaty death is getting old fast.

This is after a reload to an earlier point so that I could level up a bit more before getting to the Krogan/Geth fight at the top of the elevator after initially rescuing Liara... I may have to wuss out and drop the difficulty level :|

You don't need to drop the difficulty level. I think insanity was designed more with 2nd-3rd playthrough import characters in mind, but it's not impossible starting at level 1, you simply need to take the quests in the right order. Plot missions are comparatively easy because they are mostly lots of easy to kill geth enemies, it's the sidemissions with tons of immunity spamming mercs that can be pretty much impossible if you don't have high enough DPS weapons yet. I'd farm all the Citadel quests, do at least 3 of the plot missions (probably Therum, Feros, Noveria because Virmire has a good deal of krogan too), all of the Geth Incursions side arc and Luna's Rouge VI, and then you should have enough XP and good enough gear for everything else. The game's difficulty curve flattens out really quickly even on insanity.

Therum Battlemaster fight isn't that hard at a lower level. I always smash the toasters then kite and CC him (should be easy because you're a Sentinel). Tali's hacking is helpful with wiping out the geth quickly, and since you are already a biotic you probably won't even need to bring one though I always bring Wrex anyway, and doing so or bringing Kaidan should let you pretty much permanently CC the Battlemaster if you alternate throws and lift. ME1 biotics are stupidly OP.

I think the problem is I went there too soon... hadn't done any of the side-quests, it was the first place I went after getting command of the Normandy, so I was still quite a low level.

I've reloaded to an earlier point in the game and am currently levelling up - I strongly suspect having Pistol Marksmanship from the Sentinel tree is going to help massively! Combined with Master Overload I'm already beginning to chew through Geth nicely and since my squadmates are getting better armour now they're dirtnapping less.

I think the problem with insanity difficulty, with a new character, is not the overall difficulty but that it spikes up quite a bit in places... generally it's not too bad, challenging enough to actually have to use grenades and medi-gels but not Dark Souls style 20 reloads and hope for some luck.

You can beef up your level before fighting the battlemaster - at the lowest level in the Therum ruins (the one with the laser drill you use to blast through the wall).

After levelling up to about level 26 and getting better gear it was basically a cakewalk... just killed the Geth and then shot the Krogan in the face with a Marksmanship-powered spectre pistol (after hitting him with Overload and Warp) while he was killing Ashley. Didn't even have to play cat and mouse with him... just stood there and shot him until he fell over.

Failed once because a Geth sniper shot me - and those things pack enough of a wallop to kill a Sentinel outright unless you've got Barrier up.
