Skyhold, Here We Come!

This is a guide to help players of Dragon Age: Inquisition obtain the amount of Power Points [PP] required to get to Skyhold with the least amount of effort. Some of these can be substituted with alternatives, which I will enumerate below.

I have a few reasons for devising this strategy. One, Skyhold is where the game really gets going; we have access to storage, the tinting table, further romance quests, more maps to explore, and so on. Two, if you are a completionist like myself and have a problem with out-leveling certain content, this helps with staying in level range by starting you out at a very low level. Three, if your preferred party banter combination includes both Dorian AND Cole, this is only possible once you have reached Skyhold, and this strategy allows for the most exploration and questing with both of those in the party since most of it is left undone.

Keep in mind that this method involves very little killing or completion of additional questing, meaning that you will gain very little experience and therefore be at a lower level when heading into the missions. This guide is for PP ONLY. If you feel that the missions are too difficult at the lower levels, then I do encourage you to gain more experience through questing and killing until you feel powerful enough to complete them.

Disclaimer: I play on casual.

Please refer to the linked DAwiki pages for detailed information on each quest.

Before ever leaving Haven you can do…
01 [1 PP] Haven - Requisition for Weapons

Once you’re in the Hinterlands, after talking to Mother Giselle head to the following…
02 [1 PP] Calenhad Foothold Rift (A)
03 [1 PP] Lake Luthias Camp
04 [1 PP] Redcliffe Farm Camp
These 4 PP are what you need to do the Address the Chantry in Val Royeaux mission.

Since you’re at the Redcliffe Farms you might as well do these next two. Be sure to talk to Horsemaster Dennet and also pick up the quests Farmland Security and Trouble with Wolves.
05 [1 PP] Redcliffe Farm Rift (A)
06 [1 PP] Master of Horses (acquire your mount)

Before heading back to Haven, run around and mark the watchtower locations for Farmland Security. You can also close the next rift along the way…
07 [1 PP] Calenhad Foothold Rift ( B)

Once back in Haven, talk to Mother Giselle and pick up the Lotus and Root requisition quest. Before selecting the Val Royeaux mission, be sure to start the operation to build the watchtowers.

Address the Chantry in Val Royeaux. Recommended levels 4-7. Current level with this strategy is about 50% through level 4 (4.5).

Once you’re in Val Royeaux you can…
08 [1 PP] Recruit Belle as an Inquisition Agent
09 [1 PP] A Friend of Red Jenny (recruit Sera) *
10 [1 PP] The Imperial Enchanter (recruit Vivienne) *

Then head back to Haven to complete…
11 [2 PP] The Threat Remains - Return to Haven’s Chantry

Head back to the Hinterlands to collect the remaining points you need (15) to complete the next mission.
12 [1 PP] Outskirts Rift (A) (along Redcliffe Road)

Regardless of whether you’re going to choose the mages or the templars, you can still collect this PP. If you ARE going to pick the templars and do NOT want to talk to the mages at all, you may still close the rift at the gates and simply not proceed to Redcliffe Village. If you are going to pick the templars and want to avoid Redcliffe Village altogether, you can use another source for the following PP.
13 [1 PP] Redcliffe Gate Rift *

Once inside Redcliffe Village, proceed with the quest and complete…
14 [1 PP] In Hushed Whispers - Meet Felix in the Chantry *

Afterward head back to the Redcliffe Farms and turn in…
15 [1 PP] Farmland Security
16 [1 PP] Trouble with Wolves
17 [1 PP] Horses for the Inquisition - There is an additional PP if you recruit Dennet as an Inquisition Agent, but you may choose to wait until you have other party members (Dorian) if you want to hear their comments instead.

At any point after it’s complete you may turn in…
18 [1 PP] Lotus and Root

{*} Some of these may need substitution if you’re not going to recruit Sera, Vivienne, or talk to the mages in Redcliffe. You can add additional points with…
19 [1 PP] Outskirts Rift ( B)
20 [1 PP] Outskirts Camp
21 [2 PP] Praise the Herald of Andraste - This is a two-for-one quest. Get 1 PP for sealing the Dwarfson’s Pass Rift (A), and 1 PP for completing the quest.
22 [2 PP] Strange Bedfellows - This is a two-for-one quest. Get 1 PP for recruiting Scout Ritts as an Inquisition Agent, and 1 PP for completing the quest.
23 [1 PP] The Lone Warden (recruit Blackwall)

Two very easy alternatives for additional PP are Apostates in Witchwood [2 PP] and Templars to the West [2 PP]. I have left these out of the primary list because they award a significant amount of experience from quest completion and enemy killing. Also, there is some ambient dialog from follower NPCs, so you might want to hold off if you want to try and hear additional lines from say, Dorian or Cole. Also keep in mind that if you want to do these two quests you MUST complete them before starting In Your Heart Shall Burn, otherwise they will auto-complete (“the mages/templars are gone”) and disappear from your quest journal.

Now you have enough PP to do either In Hushed Whispers or Champions of the Just.

In Hushed Whispers OR Champions of the Just. Recommended levels 4-7. Current level with this strategy is about 50% through level 5 (5.5).

Even on casual the combat for Champions of the Just (templar path) is more difficult than In Hushed Whispers (mage path). I strongly recommend making a hard save before starting the mission so you can go back and gain more experience if you find the combat too difficult.

Completion of either of these gets you the final PP that you need to do the In Your Heart Shall Burn mission and move you onto Skyhold.

In Your Heart Shall Burn. Recommended levels 8-11. While writing this guide I did ALL of the above additional PP, as well as completed all Haven-only quests and read Haven-only codex entries, and my level was about 50% through level 7 (7.5). At the end of this mission, on finally arriving at Skyhold, I was about 25% though level 8 (8.25).

Addendum. I’m sure some people are wondering: where is Iron Bull in all of this? Keep in mind that in order to recruit IB that you need to use 4 PP to open up the Storm Coast. If all you’re interested in is getting to Skyhold as quickly as possible then you can hold off on recruiting him for now (but still be sure to talk to Krem in Haven). But, if you do want to recruit him during the prolog you can still acquire enough PP with this guide to open up the Storm Coast, recruit IB, and do In Your Heart Shall Burn without doing anything else.

Enjoy.

If this is a powerpoint presentation, why doesn't it have the .ppt extension?

More seriously, I was wondering when people would come up with something like this considering there are guides for pretty much everything. Myself, I refuse to start IYHSB at anything below level 11, but for those who want a shortcut, this is a nice addition.

You can't "take a shortcut" on nightmare. You will get decimated on IYHSB. You need to be at least level 10 with quite decent gear and team.

In my experience hushed whispers is easier than champions of the just BUT you face stronger enemies in IYHSB if you side with mages. Archers are the literal nightmare on nightmare difficulty, each arrow easily takes 50% of your rogue and mage health and stops your warriors from generating guard. Red Templar archers and those monster things that throw red lyrium shards are way harder than mage enemies.

But this guide is nice, however completing surveys is very fast way to get power as well.

This is very handy for speedrunning the first act. Thank you for posting.

Thanks :D.

The problem with the requisitions is that the ones you get are randomly chosen. Sure, you could get lucky and get the ones that involve farming ore or herbs, but just as easily be unlucky and get the ones that involve killing enemies for their items. Killing enemies is what I wanted to avoid. In fact, there are parts where I just plow through enemies, spamming the party disengage button, until I'm out of range.

Since I like to do everything in the game before defeating Corypheus, it's starting to become irksome to me to be greatly out leveled for certain content. While some of that is unavoidable with my particular playstyle, I've discovered that there are certain things I can do to mitigate that, hence the guide.

The quickest and easiest way to get those first 4 points to get to Val Royeaux is to

1) Do Inquisition Weapons requisition in Haven

2) Go to the Crossroads

3) Claim the camp at Lake Luthias

4) Collect 5 Blood Lotus at Lake Luthias camp

5) Close the rift at Calenhad's Foothold

6) Return to Haven and talk to Mother Giselle to get the Lotus and Root requisition

7) Pick 5 Elfroot in Haven

8) Fill the requisition

Poof! Four Power.
