Trick to making previews refresh?

When designing armor in Item Properties, for example, it is frustratingly inconsistent regarding if or even when the preview will refresh to reflect changed armor pieces.

Also, if you put new gear on a placed NPC on a map, same thing. I have to close the map and reopen to see that new look.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this just "the way it is"?

I would say your doing something wrong :s

When I edited my armour, it's in the "armour settings".

A default npc comes up and you can choose all the options, like belts/shoulders etc.

in my experience the toolset works best when run in win xp sp2 compatability mode. there still will be some refresh glitches, but often it is enough to tick a box, like facial hair, on and off in the properties of the npc. also make sure to edit the look of an armor in the armor settings tab.

Sometimes changing the creature scale will show the update to their outfit.

When using Windows 8.1, I've had all kinds of problems with updates not being reflected in the toolset. Even just changing colors can require multiple clicks on the color panel for it to change. Scale changes are also inconsistent; sometimes it works and sometimes not. It feels like the system is caching and not doing updates. Usually I have to close whatever I'm doing (such as an area) then open it up again.

Windows 8.1 is flaky in a lot of ways. If I have a lot of appearance changes to do, I switch over to use my WIn7 PC.

I also run it in XP SP2 mode.

I'm editing the armor by opening properties (new window) of the armor, and on Armor Set tab.

The graphics refresh is very inconsistent. Example, I can click Show as Female and model changes to a female fine. Uncheck it, and won't return to male sometimes.

Or select a new shoulder piece, boot, or some other piece and it does not change in the Properties window, but close all that out, give an NPC the armor, and it does show up there.

I have found that rebooting the computer always before opening the toolset makes graphics function much better.

I'm on 8.1, and yes, I agree, toolset worked better on my previous Windows 7 laptop.

Exactly! I tinkered with that, and other physical changes, to hopefully force a refresh. Scale works best of those.

But whatever you do, belts won't appear unless the armor has a variant with the belt, and in any case in game you'll need a transition (or use OnEquip/OnUnequip scripts, as I did for the Valsharess).

yup, on win7 it happens too. if i choose colors in the armor settings tab, the model will update but the blueprint won't. if i place a reference you can see that nothing changes. i noticed that if you simply alter the color of the armor in the properties of the npc everything gets back to work. afterwards you can use the armor settings tab without issues.

I think that's a different problem, or at least one that's been around for a long time. In Windows 8.1, the model visible in the Armor tab doesn't consistently update when you change one of the settings. (That part works fine in Windows 7.) Sometimes though the Armor tab view will update itself to be correct even when you are doing nothing.

I've been doing a lot of placeable scaling lately, and when I need changes to refresh, I've taken to hitting ctrl-x to cut the object, then paste a new refreshed instance.
