My mages wear mage robes except for my PC, who is an arcane warrior. She wears the most robust heavy/massive armor I can find as do my warriors Allistair and Sten. I put all my rogues in light armor. So, who is medium armor designed for? It strikes me as too wimpy for warriors and generally too heavy for my rogues who usually lack the strength for medium. That's my thinking, anyhow. What am I missing? Who uses medium armor and for what types of characters?
Who should use medium armor?

I don't even remember the "light" "medium" and "heavy" designations from DA:O, but it has been a long time since I played it.
It seem like you have rogue armour categorized as "light armour" in your game, so I don't even know what "medium armour" would mean in that situation. I always just assumed that in Dragon Age, light was mage robes, medium was rogue leathers, and heavy was warrior steel armour.

I use medium armor for my rogues later in the game when they have more strength. I also find the medium armor good for archers who aren't necessarily rogues.
If I created custom armor, I often reduce the fatigue for the set and use it for my Dwarf rogues early in the game.

Robes - Mages
Light - Archer Rogues
Medium - Melee Rogues
Heavy - Secondary Warriors/Arcane Warriors
Massive - Tanks
That's what I use them for anyway.

In DAO, mage robes are clothing, not armour.
Rogue leathers are light armour.
Medium is things like the chain-and-leather abomination worn by folks Ser Jory and the footsoldiers at Ostagar; the Spintmail that is Alistair's iconic armour, this Scale set he's wearing (sorry for the recolour):

and the Ancient Elven set.
I find mediums have a very limited usefulness, for warriors early game, when they haven't enough strength to equip heavy gear. Apart from the Ancient Elven gear (for roleplay), I've never used it for rogues... if my rogues are getting hit, I'm not playing them right.

True.
Good thing is that you have the freedom of choice. There are other aspects beside armor which have an impact on the success of a character build.
For example, I preferred less fatigue in general. For my 2W warrior with a build on STR and DEX I would never have considered the usage of heavy or massive armor. I equipped only 2H warriors like Sten and Oghren with heavy or massive armor.
Even Alistair had to wear light or medium armor, partly for aesthetical reasons (i.a. clipping in cutscenes). He can cope quite well with it as tank as long as his physical resistance value is high. A bit more dexterity (by items, not points) not only enhanced his ability to evade damage...well, by rumour it was welcomed outside of combat as well; the HoF blushed ![]()
'Should' ? - I think it is more dependent on personal preferences. The chosen armor type should work in a combination with other aspects. (Class build, buffs by items and spells, tactical or less-tactical play style...)
At least for me, the other properties of a specific armor had been more relevant than the armor type.

I just had the armor made earlier today. I had Wade make the medium armor for myself since I'm playing as a warrior. If I was playing as a mage I would give it to Leliana or Alistair
