I tried out the original Mass Effect way back in the day, and while I did enjoy the overall setting, the gameplay of the original game was something of a turn-off. Ultimately, I did not continue my initial playthrough - didn't even get to Virmire. However, despite Mass Effect 2 looking like it fixed practically all of my gripes with the first game, I never played it. Why? Because I felt compelled to finish the first game and not have the "missing" bits that an imported save would fill. With that said, I still couldn't bring myself to actually play Mass Effect 1 because the gameplay wasn't compelling to me. Faced with this conundrum, I simply gave up and watched other peoples' playthroughs for the story.

Now here comes Andromeda, a story completely separate from Shepard's saga. Will this be the ideal point to (re)enter the Mass Effect universe? How much of a role will continuity actually play? I really don't want a situation where "if you didn't import a save from Mass Effect 3, you're going to miss a decent portion of the game's content / all the particularly satisfying conclusions," which is how I felt about Mass Effect 2 onwards. I really want to get into Mass Effect, but I really don't want to be stuck with a "default save where everyone died and life sucked all around" (because that's apparently how Bioware treats default saves) backstory colouring everything.

Short answer: yes.

It's a reboot.

I think that ultimately, the parts of Andromeda that we visit will basically be perfectly interchangeable with those unexplored parts of the Milky Way that many would have hoped to visit. So the Andromeda part is just the story end getting away from the massive variables from the original ending. It was always going to be more fictional planets anyway. I'm just hoping that we don't get dialogue or something that says "The whole galaxy was reaped. Dodged a bullet fo sho!"

They are going to Andromeda to avoid continuity.

There will be familiar races but no familiar faces. There will be worn-down places but no maces.

Because this isn't Dragon Age. It's Space Age Mass Effect.

So if you liked the world of Mass Effect but never finished the trilogy for whatever reason, Andromeda is likely the best place to jump in at, though I myself jumped in at ME2 and only yesterday started into ME1 (and I feel your pain.).

It's meant to be a completely fresh start that's as divorced from the original trilogy as it could possibly get away with, so I would say yes.

The more divorced from the original trilogy it is the better. Hopefully they don't implement save importing beyond maybe some in-game gear.

Could've sworn I saw a "best place to start" comment on twitter. That said, "you should probably buy our other games first" doesn't garner much love, even if it's true.

Short answer: yes.

It's a reboot.

It's not a reboot.

That is the definition of a reboot. Andromeda is a sidequel or indirect sequel, really.

mass effect 3 has the genesis DLC, that's a pretty good entry point. Won't give you everything, but it will give you a lot of the past 2 games.

Good For the newcomers, probably bad For all the Others. That's My impression from the premise, At least.

F@ck the newcomers. NO! You do NOT jump into the fourth iteration of a series, reboot or no(survey says no), and get catered to! NO! BAD NOOB!

Mass Effect 2 has the same thing.

Given how far BW went to make ME3 a good place for newcomers of the series to start (to the detriment of the story, IMO), I'm sure that ME:A will be even more friendly to newcomers.

Nor does you should buy our old games first (out of the GameStop bargain bin) instead of our new $60 one garner much money.

Considering the clunky gameplay of Mass Effect 1 was what seemed to be the major issue for you, I'd guess yes. The gameplay was probably the aspect that improved most with each chapter of the seies.

While set in the same universe the next game also won't have a large connection to the previous trilogy in terms of story, so I doubt having missed out on the Shepard trilogy will be an obstacle to enjoying the game.

You could also try out Mass Effect 2 (you can probably find it in the bargain bin) and see what you think about that game first, before moving on to Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect 2 had the Genesis DLC, which was an interactive comic that fires up at the beginning of the game, allowing new players to simulate a ME1 playthrough. It gives a recap of ME1's story and allows you to make most of the major choices from ME1 before jumping into ME2.

Or download Gibbed's save editor. This way you can start a ME2 game, and then edit all the values of the decisions you could've made in ME1. A lot more extensive than the 'interactive' comic, and free to boot!

Speaking of save transfers, I wonder if ME:A will have a "Dragon Age Keep"-esque function for people going from one console to the next. After all, this is a next gen game for next gen consoles. Can't exactly transfer saves directly from one platform to the next unless you're either on PC or playing some kind of Mass Effect Trilogy on Xbone through that new backwards compatibility feature... but that leaves out the Playstation system (which would be a really bad move).

I doubt they will do save transfers at all.

True. I imagine most of the "meaningful" stuff people really want to know could be covered in dialogue choices, like how KOTOR 2 did for the first KOTOR.

I really hope you're right. No save transfers and no Keep like feature.

I had to have a full knee reconstruction and was going to be laid up for a few week, so I checked out the games and was recommended ME2. I purchased and played it, I liked it soo much (my sort of game) that I then went back and purchased ME1..., best thing I did, because it made ME2 a completely different game because of the choices that was preset in ME2 was different to what I chose.

I hope that any "new" players to the ME franchise find the game enjoyable enough to want to buy the trilogy.

ME1 was my least favorite (too long driving around in the Mako trying to find everything) and had I purchased this first I probably wouldn't have bought ME2, so I am happy that it happened that way.

Cheers

Of course it will. It's pretty much a reboot, no matter how hard people try to convince themselves otherwise.

As a side note, many companies now make their sequels / whatever friendly for newcomers. Happened with DAI, happened with Witcher 3 (although you will be kinda lost in this one if you didn't play the first 2). They actually announce their sequels as friendly for newcomers.

Probably, it's set in a new galaxy so I guess there won't be too much you'll need to know from the previous trilogy. I would really recommend trying to power through the gameplay that you dislike in the first one

If anything, I imagine they'd implement a Gensis 3, interactive backstory comic, once more.

I hope you're wrong. If you are right, they are literally throwing the previous trilogy away.
