Them being that defined is what made me like them less. Bioware made a lot of assumptions about your character for you, despite constantly selling the "They are your character" lie.

How is the inquisitor any more your character than Shepard was?... how is any DA protagonist anymore your character than Shepard was?

Let's list a few "defining" choices relating to Shepard that should have made it your own.

Shepard's List.

1.) You got to choose between 3 pre-enlistment histories for shepard. (Bonuses toward a certain reputation type.)

2.) You got to choose Shepard's gender.

3.) You got to choose between 3 military records. (This altered what kind of reputation you leaned toward and gave bonuses if future decisions matched up with the chosen alignment type.)

4.) You got to pick a class out of 6 choices.

5.) If you didn't play through ME1, ME2 and ME3 still allowed to pick relevant pre-game outcomes based on your ideal playthrough history, mind you this was before DAI and the Keep.

6.) The Journey between each start and end of the game for each game honestly had you making more decisions on things that affected the lives of your crew and other people throughout the galaxy.

7.) The entirety of the Suicide Mission, was the results of Shepard's decisions regarding how he/she related to her crewmates.

8.) There is also all the renegade/paragon moments that altered the immediate story and how people throughout the game perceived you.

9.) Let's not forget it was ME/Shepard that made the dialog wheel famous in the first place when compared to Dragon Age. Letting you choose how your shepard spoke, or handled situations.

10.) And finally you can actually see the majority of your decisions have lasting effects throughout the immediate and future games. Allowing Conrad Verner to live and generally guiding him down the right path potentially has him saving your life. This is a npc who you could have offed in either of the first 2 games, and there are tons of smaller things like that, that don't exist in DA because either because the central focus shifts from character to character in each game, or because the game takes place in a new region of the world, or they jumped to far ahead in time for anything minor to be all that relevant to the present, with some minor exceptions (Dagna, which kind of felt like fanservice.)

No, look at DAI and how much the Player character sucked because they had to shoehorn in 3 more races.

The Elf Inquisitor actually fits the best of all the races, if anything only the Qunari and Dwarves felt shoehorned.
