Hi All,

Just a quick question ...

Has anybody "upgraded" their OS to Windows X yet and installed NWN2 (or NWN1 for that matter) and tested if the TOOLSET and GAMES work OK?

I'm not brave enough to take that step just yet. ;)

Thanks,

Lance.

Is Windows 10 out yet? I was told it was due for September, in France at least.

The US release date for Win 10 seems to be July 29th. I'm in no rush.

Hi All,

I wondered if anybody had tried a BETA version and had any feedback.

Please update if anybody does have any report.

Cheers,
Lance.

Did I miss 9?  I haven't been paying attention or in a hurry to mess up my OS.

Hi Tchos,

MS are bypassing Windows 9 and going straight to 10. And anybody with Windows 7 or 8 are (as far as I am aware) being offered a free upgrade to Windows 10. I have the option to "reserve" a copy myself, but I am not going to do anything until I am confident that Windows 10 is a good to go.

Cheers,
Lance.

Considering how messed up the toolset has become with Windows 8.1, I'm in no hurry.

Ha, I just came on to ask the same question.

I have the alert on my task bar now so the upgrade is ready. It's free for the first year after release for owners of Xp, 7 and 8 though I think there are particular issues for xp users?

I believe it even free for those with unregistered/illegal copies of these platforms. I guess to draw you into the windows fold along with all the other sheep. There's a year for this so I am in no hurry either. I am no computor tech so I will be B******d if it goes wrong on me. I shall wait and see.

Well, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear they'll give it free to anyone with 7 or 8, but calling it 10 and pretending that the 9th iteration is not 9 seems silly.  Unless this is supposed to mean that they were working on one that would have been called 9 but scrapped it utterly since it was going in the same direction as 8.  Doesn't matter to me, though, as I'm more or less happy with the version I'm using from when they weren't using numbers, and it's hard to imagine anything beyond it not getting worse.

Not offering it to Vista users, because we're satisfied with it, right?  ;)

I read somewhere that it was a deliberate skip, to show that Win 10 had nothing in common with 8 or 8.1

I thought it was a beta version... Anyway, I confirmed I'm interested, I'll check as soon as it is released (dual boot Win 7 / Kubuntu, so I'm quite confident I'll still have a working computer!)

They skipped 9 because the number is considered unlucky in Japan and they don't want to limit that market is what I read. However I just looked it up and there's a few other reasons out there so who knows  :huh:

I'm afraid to update Widows anymore. The last time I did it I lost the registration for Cubase AI7 and was told this DAW software I'd bought and put in hours on was suddenly a "tryout version" that had expired.

Not sure of your experience but I'm using the toolset and win 8.1 just fine.  Haven't had any issues of note.  I'd like to know about people's Win10 experiences as well as I know MS will intentionally make life difficult for old version hanger-ons.  I'm curious as to how long the "free" upgrade will last as I don't want to make any changes until they work out major issues and drivers have a chance to catch up.

Hmm. Well for me it's been a headache. Maybe there's a setting that can be modified then? Or perhaps it's something to do with the nVidia card?

I believe one of those being 8.1 sort of was 9.  Personally, I hate Windows 8 with a passion and can't wait to get this off my computer.  I've considered wiping it out and going back to 7 which I thought was fantastic and is going to be supported well into the future from what I hear.

HP was having a close out on hardware with Win7 installed. My Vista machine is getting a bit shaggy so go a new PC with an established OS. I may or may not take the free upgrade to 10. We'll see how it goes.

Well, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear they'll give it free to anyone with 7 or 8, but calling it 10 and pretending that the 9th iteration is not 9 seems silly.

The reason Microsoft devs have given for skipping "Windows 9" is because there's software out there that was written 10+ years back when win95/98 were still relevant. These applications would for example need to do one thing on Win95/98 and another on WinNT. The simplest solution was naturally to do something like this:
String osName = System.getProperty("os.name");
if(osName.startsWith("Windows 9"))
	os = new Windows9x();
else if(osName.startsWith("Windows"))
	os = new WindowsNT();
It's a clumsy hack of a solution, but did work perfectly. Right up until you'd want this to run on something called "Windows 9".
This may seem silly and a non-issue: After all who'd still use ancient software like that? Well you'd be surprised. A lot of companies and other institutions still use software that's decades old. Why change it if it still works, right? And even software that's "new" often still contains old code. Why throw away everything and start from scratch when you don't have to, right?
So it's plausible that this was one of the main reasons why they skipped "Windows 9", since that would again be the simplest solution.

Seemingly random switching from version numbers to the year of release to letter codes to full names, back to numbers, and all of the confusion that can cause these poor developers, I suppose skipping a version number is no more bizarre than the rest.

I don't know if this is related to your issues, but there are programs that make 8.1 work and look pretty much the same as 7 (at least to a non-expert like me). For what it's worth, 8.1 hasn't given me any trouble with NWN2 or any other games. I'm not into toolsetting so I can't speak about that specifically.

I think I have that same program on a disk somewhere.  It's called Windows 7.  Lol. :P

Honestly, it has been quite stable and has agreed well with anything I have run on it.  My beef is mostly with the aesthetics and it's unnecessary straying from the basic Windows layout and function that has always been more than simple and effective enough for me.  Aesthetically, I found 7 to be very clean, elegant, stable and not full of unnecessary changes that are seemingly made in order to justify someone's salary or a new OS.

That's my point; I have Windows 8.1 and the layout and aesthetics are the same classic ones I had when I had 7. I wouldn't like it otherwise either.

I've still got Windows 7, and I've always had it set to the 'classic' Windows look. I don't need rounded corners or translucent windows. I like the retro look with square grey borders - it's like I was never forced to upgrade from Windows XP. :)
