OK which old British sitcoms do you remember and love?

For me

Fawlty Towers - goes without saying it's a classic
Robin's Nest
The Goodies - More slapstick but still I'd consider it a sitcom
Some Mothers Do 'ave Em
Open All Hours
Keeping Up Appearances
On The Buses

Just finished series 1 of Some Mothers. That employment exchange episode had me in fits of laughter...

Can you imagine Frank Spenser as our front line against an alien invasion?

Fawlty Towers is so good mostly because of the power of Cleese

Does A Bit of Fry and Laurie count as a "Sitcom"

Saw two episodes of that right before the "House" Pilot aired

Tons.

I love Keeping Up Appearances.

It's so spot on about how some English folks are.

It's hilarious.

I honestly think I could watch the "fire drill" sequence from the 6th episode of Fawlty Towers every week for the rest of my life and still laugh every single time. There's something ingenious about the way the chaos slowly escalates with several different characters contributing to it, but each in a way that their actions make perfect sense to them at the time. Everyone remembers the "don't mention the war" bit that comes afterwards, but IMO the episode and the series peaked in the fire drill scene.

And props to Cleese for being willing to play such a thoroughly unlikeable character. I know he's talked in at least one interview about what an awful person he thinks Basil Fawlty is.

I seem to be in the minority among people who actually think Red Dwarf was best in its first two seasons as simply a sitcom in outer space, compared to the subsequent years when the sci-fi concepts started to play a greater role.

Our family had a cat who liked to walk around the house "claiming" various pieces of furniture by rubbing his face on them, and whenever we saw him doing it, my mom would quote the Cat from Red Dwarf: "This is mine...and this is mine...and this is mine...."

Love and watched a lot of these shows over the years. One which I don't think has been mentioned yet, and is a favourite of mine, Porridge.

The only Brit Sitcom I've watched from start to finish is Black Books.. but it's not old. I love the hell out of it though. Would I like any of these others?

I know. That alone makes Devilish Redhead Thread #566 inherently flawed. That and the lack of IT Crowd.

I think it's a strong show even after they branched out into being more Sci-Fi stuff.

That JFK episode is solid.

I think it only took a dive after Rimmer left and got replaced by Kochanski. And Season 8. And I wasn't big on Back to Earth either.

But I didn't mind Season 10 from what I watched from it.
