Wouldn't the same be true of other decisions made in the game? The geth/Quarian debate is one of the most notorious. By this logic, we should never have big decisions like that, because the fandom would bicker endlessly about it and get threads locked.
Or how about the Mage versus Templar debate, or the DA vs TW3 debate that's going on right now. The folks in the big thread very rarely ever talk about the sex scenes, and yet the debating can get very toxic. The romance content isn't making things any worse. Sure, there is a lot of active romance threads on the ME forums at the moment, but romance is a topic people tend to enjoy talking about online. No other company does it quite like BioWare does, so it makes sense that romance threads (whether it be for or against romances) come up quite a bit.
We'd still have plenty of fuel to fight and bicker over. Let me put it this way: It isn't the romance or sexuality threads where I've seen the most nuked posts more often than not.
Might as well pull out my stock answer for this thread:
I would prefer if they kept romances for their existing IPs. Both DA and ME to me were enhanced by the romances. The romances aren't a "make or break" for me in BioWare games. For the most part, with a few exceptions, it's the friendships that stand out. Still, I enjoy them in my games.
However, for any new IPs that will be coming down the pike, like the world DG is helping build at the moment, I'd be okay if they left romances out entirely. Gaider back in 2013 called the romance content a "Pandora's Box." He enjoys writing them, but does sometimes wonder if they are more trouble than they are worth.
So yeah, that's my take on it. I would prefer if they kept romances for their current games, but I don't consider it mandatory for every BioWare game. If they create a game and leave the romances out of it, that's fine too. I know that one of my biggest reasons for playing a BioWare game is going to be left intact, which are the friendships.
No one is forcing me to romance these characters. Which is good, because some of these LIs I can't stand and would never romance. Heck, I ignored the romances for years in BW games because I didn't care for my choices.
