To clarify. I'm not asking for Kids under Military Age on the Squad. But if you can fight for your Country at 18 (it is 18 in America, right?), then you can be on the Squad of a Ship at the Age of 18. One Companion of that Age Range - would that really hurt?

Yeah, we got that and it's an interesting idea. Maybe that young person isn't on the squad directly? Perhaps a crew member? Cause usually you are in boot camp at that age, not part of an important mission.

The thread has moved on to kids now though. ;)

I think it'd be cool. Besides, as we've been through, we have Liara, Tali, and the aforementioned Mission in KoTOR, who was 14, I believe.

Personally, I would very much like to unambiguously determine the PC's age ourselves this time. We've had plenty of freedom to make our characters look old as balls if we so choose, but their circumstances are frequently not conducive to characters older than thirty something - usually younger. Shepard's never not 29. And I can't really buy a 52 year old mage embarking on her harrowing, or as the scion of house Cousland.

-Self Snip-

. . .why did I type all this up?

here are some of our squadmates' ages, Estimated and at first time of joining Shepard. I've also included some other bits of information alongside it to show relevant information.

Asari:

Liara- 106 (Maiden Stage; Human Equivalent is Estimated between 18 and early 20's.)

Samara- Est. 1'000 (Matriarch Stage; Human Equivalent is estimated at 80's. Still strong, capable and not crippled by age. Alien biology not accounted for)

Turian:

Garrus- Est 25-27 (Military service EST 15)

Drell:

Thane- EST 39-40 (Born in 2146; Training begins at 6; first kill at 12; dies in 2186)

Krogan:

Wrex- EST 1'000 (Human Estimate at roughly 80 years. Still strong, capable and not crippled by age. Alien biology not accounted for.)
Grunt-  EST Equivalent of 13-16, human puberty range; (Tank-bred to age; Implanted with various other memories and information.)

Okeer*- Not used in the calculation at the bottom of this post, but Okeer is well over 1385 years old, as he was a veteran of the Krogan Rebellions. The year given assumes he was born the day it ended, but that's clearly not the case. He is roughly 1385 years old plus Grunt's krogan age (versus his 'human-equivalent' age.) at the very least.

Salarian:
Mordin Solus: EST Mid-late 30's (Born in 2150's Dies in or a year prior to 2186. Near end of lifespan; Nephew is 16)

Human:

Jenkins: EST Early-Mid 20's (Younger than or equal to Ashley. VA voices the young merc in ME2 during the Archangel mission. RIP Jenkins. ;_;7)

Kaiden: EST 31 (35 in ME3.)
Ashley:  25 (28 in ME3)
Jacob: EST 26 (A year older than Ashley; 29 in ME3.)
Miranda; EST 33 (Genetically modified and created. 36 in ME3)

Kasumi: EST Early-mid 20s, near Ashley's initial age
Jack: 24-25

Zaeed Massani (RIP. ;_;7): EST Mid-late 50s, Early 60s(Blue Suns Mercenary Organization founded in 2160, ME3 takes place in 2186. Voice Actor was 59 when the character debuted.)
Vega: EST 28 (Assumption of Enlistment after High School AKA 18. Joins Marines in 2176, joins squad in 2186.)

Captain Anderson*: Not used in the below calculation, but he is roughly 48 at the beginning of Mass Effect.

Quarian:

Tali- 23 (same year as Jack; encountered two years earlier.)

Prothean:

Javik: EST Old as shi-

Other:
Legion: Not used in the below calculation, but least 280 years old assuming what came to be known as 'Geth' existed since the Geth Rebellion in 1895CE.
EDI: Three, technically.
----------------

Thanks to the magic of math, the Mean age of all Eightteen of our age-available companions (Javik, EDI, and Legion are not accounted for, due to obvious reasons.) throughout the trilogy is 35. This is not entirely accurate due to using human-equivalent ages for Liara, Samara, Grunt (who we can't properly determine a physical age equivalent for) and Wrex not to mention being unable to find out any solid information on some characters age-wise. What's more, I did not use the age of all companion age's during the course of ME3, I instead used their age at the time of first meeting. . .Also I included Jenkins as a legitimate part of Shepard's squad (which he was) but did not include the other temporary companions as neither of them were ever under Shepard's command in a story sense.

I'd consider this an appropriate age mean for a story of warriors traveling the galaxy: it's close enough to the typical 'prime' of life of humans and accommodates older characters as well. There's a fair amount of variety amongst the characters age-wise, but most characters fall within the 25-35 range.

Depends.

You can join the military at 18, but there's no guarantee that you'll be combat ready at 18, especially for anything more than infantry (if my understanding is correct). A proper naval position takes years of training at least, and I can't imagine a cadet fresh from the academy would be welcome on a ship full of special operatives (if that is indeed what we're going to be).

I like a wider age range because it's logical that not everyone in the story will have the same age. But if it's an RPG where characters level, whatever the age range, it has to make sense.

Dragon Age Origins has one of the best explanations for why the various party members grow in strength over the course of the game--they're either young, inexperienced upstarts (The Warden, Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran) or experienced fighters who have lost their touch for one reason or another (Wynne, Sten, Shale, Oghren, Leliana, Dog, Secret Companion).

In Mass Effect, it was odd seeing the seasoned and powerful 1000-year old Wrex have the same comparative abilities as greener squaddies like Liara.

Mission was more a teenager.

Usually you only have kids on the team when they are incredibly powerful or total badasses. Or if your commanding officer tells you to look after his favourite niece. :P

Who would want to play a character that was young, inexperienced and stupid when you could be old experienced and stupid. The latter is the demographic I feel most comfortable with in games, for err...personal reasons.

Nope, I play games with good stories since I was like 13, now 4 years older. Always have been more mature beyond my age, and guess that's why I can compare myself more easily with adults in game. I am already past the issues you mentioned, like with Merill. But may I ask your age?

I was never that young...

Well, from the viewpoint, that i want ME 4 to be such a big success for EA, that they let Bioware do what they want and continue the ME-Series in a good quality...

ofc there should be companions for players of every age, so as much people as possible have as much fun on it as possible.

From the viewpoint of a misanthrophic, grumpy, 40 years old human male that doesn't looks that different from his shepard...

If i get spared completly childminded jerks like Sera (or am allowed to kill them), i have no problem with young teammates.

In fact in real life i come along better with people ranged 20-30 than 40+, for the average 40 years old human usually bores the crap out of me.

It depends on the chars, i think a good mixture will serve the fandom best.

A cast around 30 years of age is ideal to me, and is also what feels the most credible in terms of the responsibilities they have to shoulder and/or the experience they should possess. I don't mind the addition of older veterans at all, but call me unfair, I must admit I have no interest in dealing with teenage/young adult problems in my games, like someone leaving home for the first time or needing a lot of mentoring. We had the naive newcomer with Liara in ME1, Merrill in DA2, and to a certain extent Alistair in DAO and Vega in ME3, but I personally prefer characters with a bit more depth to their background, like Mordin and his special ops/genophage past, Wrex and his merc past, Aria T'Loak, Samara the Justicar with the cursed daughters, Thane the widowed ex-assassin, Solas, Varric, etc.

That being said, OP, you will probably get your wish as a character like the one you want has been included in every BW game. Not sure it's that important for them to come out and say they are 18 for them to be perceived as very young and/or naive.

Indeed we were.

I thought I was mature at that age too, but looking back now there's a lot I cringe at recalling.

I actually skipped that year. I heard it was lame so I didn't bother.

I'd be cool with an Ender Wiggin or Wild Flower or Radical Edward. (noncombatant or something contrived like personally designed remotely controlled combat drone or AI partner)
