My wife has a disdain for gaming I've been unable to mitigate.

She loves reading and TV, but I've never been able to get her to see good RPGs are like both, but better.

It's a small price to pay to spend the rest of my with her.

She was looking over your shoulder as you were typing, right?

It is quite nice knowing I'll be able to play video games as an old geezer. I thank all of you fogies that give me hope.  :D

I should really think of a new password instead of using the same one for everything, ever.

Or at least check the option that shows you edited a post.... ;)

so why is it worth noting that #1 is female if there isn't some kind of sexism?

Why not? Why you want to be sexist? Facts don't merit notation because it may offend who?

If you'd just chill out this whole thing would blow over.

The funny thing is that there's nothing to even blow over... This has been a pretty nice, civil thread with some interesting opinions and experiences shared :P

oh just the opposite in my opinion, too many of you hijack this forum.
All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of the agents of the United States Handicapper General.

Damn lol, I thought you sounded like a young teenage boy when I helped you the other day.  I'm useless.....

Oh, dear...

No, I'm a 30-year-old woman.

...that could be me being on the phone....

A situation that really happened:

phone: *rings*

me: *takes it* A*****. (my lastname)

telephone selling agent: Hello, are you Mrs. A****?

me: No, that's my mother.

telephone selling agent: Oh, you're the son. *changes voice to a tone with which you talk to little kids* Is your mommy home?

me: .....No.

<--- 29 year old woman  <_<

Back on Topic: I never noticed any sexism in DAIMP, but that could be because my headset (mostly my mic) doesn't work most of the time.

The only funny thing I once noticed was a German guy, who talked in German with his friend and whenever he talked to me, he would talk in englisch.  (it was late in the night and I think he thought I might be from the USA or so  :D)

I've ran into a couple guys who acted like jerks, but when I called them out on it and they discovered I was female their tone totally changed.

There was also that time I was talking on mic to someone I had just met. Another guy joins in on the conversation and starts referring to me as "she". This confuses the first guy. He sounds surprised and asks if I really am a female. I confirm. He says he thought I was a young boy...  The other guy says, "that would be a very squeaky boy" and laughs. It was pretty funny. No one has ever confused me as a guy before.

In ME3 MP I used to get "pretty good, for a girl" or "I can't believe a girl is beating me!" msgs now and then. Those were annoying. <_<

Hm, I usually play on mute, but I'll sometimes speak up if there are other mic users, or if I'm playing with buddies. Though lately, I've been sick for the past week or so (making me all the more hesitant to use the mic), since my voice apparently sounds like an "80 year old pot smoker" xD

I have an alto voice, so it seems to be a bit lower than a lot of women (but not crazy low like baritone). This may contribute to people thinking I'm a young man rather than an adult woman. Eh. :P

I was in a good group for a number of matches with a couple of guys who were chatting up a storm (I'm on Xbox 360, btw.)  Their banter was rather comical, and I spent the first match just listening and laughing at their jokes with my mic turned off.  Someone asked me about my character's build, and not too soon after I explained my load out to them, the jokes stopped and the overall tone changed.  I found this odd, so I turned my mic back off and asked my partner his opinion.  He said something to the effect of "I think you make them nervous.  They're just awkward.  They don't know how to speak to girls, and maybe they're afraid they'll say something stupid in front of you.."  I don't know if he was serious, or if he was joking.  Feel free to weigh in on this...

Now, I've come across a lot of cool, down to earth guys (and gals) who play DAIMP, but there are still a few jerks out there who view women/girls as trespassers, and it's those few jerk-apples who tend to spoil the bunch by fostering an unwelcoming environment where most of us don't feel comfortable enough to speak over the mic unless we hear another female voice..!  I, personally, haven't been on the receiving end of any blatantly sexist comments or harassment (in DAIMP.)  However, some of the guys that I've pugged with either became more reserved at the sound of my voice, or just plain ignored me all together (I've also been mistaken for a teenage boy once, or twice...)  It's a bit of a downer, but I still find DAIMP fun.  I just don't use my headset any more and let my actions speak for me instead.

Look I'm a reluctant banner carrier for this.  You started a new thread and now it's a thing.  Not at all what I wanted.  I enjoy your posts.  I'm sure you're a fine person.  The fact of the matter is everyone falls prey to some sort of minor discriminatory behavior or feeds it.   The fact that you're upset by this means you don't view yourself as a sexist.  All to the good, I don't really view you as a sexist either.  As I've said before, I believe.

But let's take this in turn:

1.  in the first mention, you say you've heard the top player is a girl, in the second you say "rumor has it" -- this is not fact.  Let's be clear you were not pointing out a fact.

2.  There can be only two reasons why it merited mentioning (since it is completely immaterial to the fact that Medallian is not first overall):  a)  it was a psychological choice based on what you thought would most irritate Medallian and compound the irritation of not being first or B) it was remarkable (deserving of note or deserving remark).  I personally feel if it had been the first, you'd have said so straight away.  Instead, you say there was nothing untoward in what you said.

This is not really a big deal to me. I'm not invested in this as much as you think I am (or as much as you seem to be).  I'm as guilty of feeding the machine as anyone else.  I am shamelessly not above capitalizing on chivalrous behavior or using my looks (though admittedly not very very often) and that's really not much different.  I think I may be better at introspective evaluation than you are though because you keep insisting that there was nothing to your comment.

This has happened to me many times. Some dude: That's a girl?!?!?!  Everyone else: YESOOMG. One dude kept referring to me as he and I had to say "She. I'm a woman. A woman. Stop calling me he." like ten times before he got it. I was even playing the Necro, so it wasn't even my chara that he was referring to.

The only thing I really dislike about playing MP is the plethora of times people use the term "rape" to describe getting beaten or giving a beating. Very unpleasant for me to hear "dude, you just got raped" when I died in a match by some dude. Most have been understanding when I ask them not to do that around me, however.

Id pay good money to see you interect with people in real social situations. I imagine you're incredibly passive and meek. People like you usually are.

Of course he'd be meek. I'd put everything I own on it.

Equality?  Nah...it's because everyone knows they have softer lips.  Basic biology here, based on collagen proportionalities vis-a-vis males.

Vive la différence !
