How to improve sniping and headshots on console

This may well be down to player ability (or lack of it) but I was wondering whether there are any tips and tricks for improving accuracy with single shot and low firing rate weapons on consoles?

90% of my head shot medals come from high fire rate weapons like the ARs and SMGs, because I'm able to adjust aim while firing (and so track up etc). I'm not bad at that, but I'm bloody awful at acheiving head shots with the big sniper rifles and the Arc Pistol. So much so that I avoid using them much, even though I've seen many others use them brilliantly.

I think the major problem is fear of missing. Enemies move, more or less, before and during the shot. When you have a large mag, that's not a worry. But with slow firing weapons, you know a miss is going to allow them to close in/fire/dodge, and you'll be vulnerable. So I tend to forgo the head shot in favour of a body shot that's more likely to hit, despite knowing that I'm losing significant dps.

I'm looking for anything, no matter how basic or obvious, that may improve things. I have particular difficulty with the Javelin and the Arc Pistol.

Thanks

It's mostly up to the skill level of the player but I'd recommend practicing with the Salarian Infiltrator. Energy Drain->easy headshot. You just have to practice and get a feel for it really. It will eventually come to you.

Use both sticks to aim. The movement and looking sticks to strafe and then hone in on the head. Yes it is really stupid it has to be that way.

Practice is what does the trick honestly.

A few tips though:

1)Kill enemies in hard cover first, those are easy headshots.

2)Use stunning powers to line up headshots on moving targets, sabotage is the best IMO outside of stasis.

3)Learn to anticipate enemy movement. IDK there's just a pattern to enemy movement that you get used to. I generally miss some early in a match then get on later and it's on. I'll miss high a lot with the arc pistol early but latter domes start splitting and it's easy mode from then on.

Quick-scope -> aim assists pulls you to the center of the body mass -> drag upwards

If only that were true, 80% of the time. If there's multiple enemies you can bet it will go right in between them and split the difference. Not saying aim assist doesn't help a lot but it's not the complete easy mode you make it out to be. Aim assist will always prioritize swarmers for instance.

I'm not even saying it's easy mode. I'm saying it's horrible.

That I would agree with. That said IDK how they could change it outside of better gaming controls on console.

The design of console controls is such that I don't really see it. Shooting on consoles will always be an ordeal, much like playing fighter games (Street Fighter, Soul Calibur,...) is if you try those on PC.

Combination of quick scoping and not quick scoping (taking for time to make sure you have that headshot lined up) if using a one shot SR.

Harrier is perfect for practicing since it's so accurate without having to be in hard cover (I snipe with this weapon across the map for headshots all the time). And since you don't want it's ammo issues, you always have to aim for headshots. But if an enemy dodges, stop firing and bothering trying to follow the dodge while shooting and instead re-align to where they land and start again with headshot shots. Simple.

Stability on some weapons and for high rate fire kits (since this increase recoil too) helps a lot too I find.

I have particular difficulty with the Javelin and the Arc Pistol.

Console aim assist is very annoying with snipers but the Javelin, imo, has not been coopted. The firing delay when pulling the trigger is just enough time to realign to the head. For this reason I find the javelin easier for headshots than other snipers.

For the arc pistol I try to find some sweet RHA and make sure I can look straight at them, face-to-face, and plant one between their eyes. Anything other than a perfect 180 degree arc between weapon and target seems to elevate the difficulty. Much easier when they move straight at you. Also, the best time to land headshots is right after a roll/dodge because they're relatively immobile.

Practice makes perfect.

Also, learn which targets actually require headshots to kill in one shot, and which targets cannot be killed in less than 2 shots with your current character/weapon/ammo setup.

Asari Adept with Stasis with the Bubble evolution is another good way to practice headshots. Use AP or Drill Rounds for added wallhax fun. I recommend Cerberus as the optimal enemy faction to practice against, because you can Stasis Bubble everything except Dragoons and Atlases.

It really is just practice. When I started on the 360 I couldn't buy a headshot. Now I'm... tolerable at them. Never going to be great but I do get the 20 HS medal when I put my mind to it.

Aim for the head?

I guess if I'm being srs, using adrenaline mods or characters with passive movement speed bonuses (take DAI or GI) is helpful. Biower couldn't be bothered to allow us to change the aiming sensitivity or acceleration manually, but it is tied to movement speed.

In general, if you want to improve your aim just play the Quarian Marksman, preferably with a Saber or other such civilized weapon. Played optimally, he doesn't really have any stagger crutches except headshots/ spike damage from his weapon (and occasionally sabotage if you put any points in it), so you either git gud or git rekt.

Thanks for all the advice. In  particular, the SI is a great suggestion as a practice platform for the Arc Pistol. And this...

...is completely new to me - I had no idea.

But I'll basically be trying to do everything suggested in this thread (apart from switching to PC)

The DAI in particular is an easy sniper kit to use. Drells have quick acceleration and high movement speed that transfers to aiming sensitivity, and recon mine slows enemies and gives you a wallhack at long ranges.

There's also the SI and QFI for their abilty to fire a staggering hitscan power to line up the shot and strip away shields over a pretty good radius, but I find that to be an inefficient strategy. Better to aim and fire the shot manually then use the power to hide your reload on a singleshot gun, or cast it between rounds on a multishot one like the BW.
