To add, could you imagine getting Shockwaved through cover, or Paladin / Sexbot snap freezing through walls, or the Goon squad smashing through them, Shadows would insta-kill everyone. As you said, it would just not function without a mechanics re-design.
Other games I've played where stealth is strong with pvp, those classes tend to dominate the population and for good reason.
To add to the conversation chain, you also have to consider what the inclusion of PvP would do to the variety of species and kits that we currently have in the MP.
Asymmetrically competitive games are very, very, very, very (you get the idea) hard to balance properly, and most developers simply forgo the elements that make the various classes unique and instead streamline everything. Do we really want a PvP mode where we can only play as the six vanilla human classes?
If the ME 3 MP was a competitive shooter, I can bet that kits like the Volus, or Geth Juggernaut, or the Krogan Battlemaster/Warlord would have never seen the light of day; sacrificed in the holy pursuit of balance.
Quarian Master Race mentioned Destiny, and that is a perfect example of class homogenization in order to incorporate PvP balance. Did a Titan, Hunter, or Warlock really feel that different from each other?
