I'm baffled as to why there's even a choice to spare the Reaper Rachni, Why would a renegade shep whom killed the original queen spare an even more dubious one?

Shepard dying was just a way to give Paragon Shepards an excuse to work for Cerberus.  Mostly all the Renegade options were open to the idea.  I think it would have made a lot more sense for Shepard to turn to Cerberus on his own but at least the beginning of ME2 was dramatic.

I'd agree. A Paragon Shepard (Well, a pure one anyway) would've too many problems.
The exception on Renegade Shepards might be A Sole Survivor.

It really didn't. It was just another way to screw over renegades I guess. But only the dumb ones.

 

Also don't remind me of the stupidity of my sole survivor joining Cerberus without tearing TIM a new one.

The problem is this: Shepard decides to work with Cerberus anyway. Shep doesn't have a mind control chip or anything; it's by Shep's own free will. TIM tells Shepard "Go to Freedom's Progress..." and Shepard does. Afterwards, Shepard decides to work with Cerberus to "TAKE DOWN the Collectors."

 

Having Shepard get wiped by the Collectors was utterly pointless. I'm not one of those types who thinks that resurrection and reanimation are the same and hated it because Shepard's a cyborg zombie or whatever nonsense, but it really was just drama for the heck of it.

yo I saw this topic and I had to comment at for the idiots that are hating on Commander Shepard you can suck a dick Commander Shepard is the most badass character in the entire franchise without Commander Shepard the Mass Effect series would never have been as good personally I have every single Mass Effect game and Dragon Age game and honestly I'm not too thrilled about this new Mass Effect but it's too early to tell anyways this point not only did Commander Shepard save Earth but he said the entire galaxy and defeated the Reapers and the geth and many other enemies no one can replace Commander Shepard that's just like people are trying to replace Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine

Note that other spectres solo everything while Shepard goes in with entire crews.

Hackett is filling Shepard full of a bunch of propaganda. Nice. It's obvious that Shepard was space Jesus. There was something special - flashed by the Prothean beacon. Possessing the Cipher. Solving everyone's problems in the galaxy.... even getting the stupid jellyfish off the Presidium when the C-sec officer couldn't do it. Conrad Verner asking for her autograph. The first human Spectre. Then dying and coming back to life. I mean that's something right there. The resurrection of The Shepard. A mere Lt. Commander who is going to unite the galaxy under one banner to fight against the greatest threat it has ever known.....

I beg to differ. Shepard also can headbutt a krogan, fist fight with Yahg, survive Thresher Maw attacks, survive direct hit of Reaper ray, have hangover after drinking poison, remember everything after being dead for hours (not counting days in stasis here) and is generally viewed as death machine which can get wherever you send it.

Shepard is much better at doing what he's told than those other guys, I guess?

 

Really though my personal headcanon as to why TIM paid a fortune to bring him/her back is that Shep has the Prothean Cipher, and Prothean tech was the most likely place to find something helpful against the Reapers. Also it doesn't hurt to have humanity's only Spectre at the time in your pocket, which didn't work out but works as a secondary motive for TIM.
