Oh man... I think I've had a change of heart, lol. I just saw this absolutely ridiculous video... and my hate for the Acolyte completely subsided. It by no means discounts any of the arguments made against the weapon in the context of this thread. But I honestly believe that the type of gameplay demonstrated in this video would not be possible with any other weapon. It has got to be the most aggressive gameplay I have ever seen in an ME3 video. Not saying that it is the most skillful, or even the most efficient, but it demonstrates that the Acolyte perhaps allows one to use their powers in the most aggressive manner possible.
Hmmm... I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is a silver lining with the Acolyte that I hadn't seen before. Just as it can facilitate a dull, conservative play style as an l2p weapon (e.g. facilitating constant flamer spamming, for instance), it can also enable an extremely aggressive style of play in the hands of a skilled user. In the latter case, the user's"skill" is obviously not measured by their proficiency with the Acolyte itself, but rather with regard to the effectiveness and efficiency with which they wield their powers.
Don't get me wrong, I still think the weapon should have been balanced better (e.g. more weight, less of a multiplier to shields and or barriers), but I just wanted to let you all know, that this Acolyte gameplay that I saw was truly exciting, and even a bit inspirational.
Here's a link to the gameplay that I came across if anyone is interested: very aggressive acolyte gameplay
