I'm doing my second full playthrough, and I want to avoid having Varric lag behind everyone. By the end Bianca was only getting Varric 100 to 120 dps, while Sera was using a custom made bow that had her doing at least twice that. It got to the point that his only use was his poison debilitations and his artificer passives, because Sera was in a whole different league in terms of raw damage. So what upgrades do I need? I only got him up to a Biance arms IV last playthrough.
How to make ranged Varric keep up with the party in terms of damage?

Right now on my Human Templar playthrough, my Varric is equipped with:
Bianca
170 DPS
140 Damage
+10 Fire Damage
+14% Attack
+42% Critical Chance
+20 Cunning
Superior Prowler Armor
288 Armor Rating
+30 Cunning
+7% Magic Defense
+9% Melee Defense
+21% Ranged Defense
Superior Skirmisher Hat
37 Armor Rating
+18 Cunning
Amulet of the Rouge
+5 Dexterity
+5 Cunning
Ring of Slicing
+5% Critical Chance
+10% Critical Damage
Superb Ring of Critical Damage
+20% Critical Damage
It takes work to get there, but Varric can get 100% Critical Chance. Combine that with Opportunity Knocks and Looked Like it Hurt, and Varric basically has a permanent Flask of Fire buff. Just make sure all his attacks hit the enemy to get both more stamina and reduce cooldowns and his DPS will outpace Seras, even when comparing each of their Focus skills.
The upgrades you need the most are:
Bianca Aiming III (Enhanced) - Looted from the chest in the Tomb of Fairel during the Hissing Wastes side quest, The Tomb of Fairel
Bianca Arms III (Enhanced) - Looted from a chest in the dwarven tomb near the Sand Crags Camp in the Hissing Wastes
Masterwork Firm Bianca Grip - Reward from the quest Map of Halin'sulahn in the Exalted Plains
