I've had trouble setting up Aveline to do much in the way of damage.  Does anyone have a good build for her on Nightmare difficulty that emphasizes damage over tanking?  I feel she has untapped potential that could make her more than just an amazing tank.  I think I may have been using a bad attribute spread that continually left her behind Strength wise.  What would be a good attribute distribution for her?

Talent-wise it seems to me that she would need to get Cleave, and I've done that with her, and even tried turning off her Immovable sustain so she wouldn't lose her attack speed, but I still find her auto-attack damage combined with her attack speed to add up to the lowest of anyone's and damage from her talents consistently substandard compared to every other character.  Is it just not possible to get her auto-attacks and single talent uses up to par with the other characters? 

Are there any must-have talents for her offensively?  The only way I find Aveline useful on offense is if I Shield Pummel to set up a Stagger for someone else to exploit, and that's obviously only her setting up a CCC.  I suppose a big problem may be that I may not have been using an upgraded Scatter or Assault often enough on a Disoriented enemy--is that the best way to get damage from her?

I know at least a Hawke Sword & Shield build can do lethal things from AreleX's Mach-5 Massacre thread which obviously can't be matched without Hawke's specializations, but does someone have a suggested killer damaging build for Aveline?

No, there's no way for Aveline to do comparable to other companions damage. Her spec tree is completely defensive and unlike Hawke she doesn't have access to Reaver/Berserk trees. Even with Vanguard tree developed - 75% from 0 is still 0, figuratively speaking.

I go 1-1-1 str will con on her. From lvl 18 on 2 str 1 con.

I do take cleave but late game. Before that I ran a party which disoriented openents constantly and had aveline use that one scatter swing attack from sword and shield tree with bonus damage to disoriented targets

Thanks for the input.  I'm about to start a Nightmare game with her.  I'll see if I can get any more than Scatter CCC's and her guaranteed Stagger set up running as little tank sustains as possible.  I've never tried Might on her--I'm always using her for the defensive sustains.  If I'm going after Cleave, I may as well try it.

The thing with Aveline is, her damage is quite high even though she is a tank. Once she reaches level 12 or something, if built properly, she simply cannot die. She will never take enough damage to die without the healing potion becoming ready again.

 

Many, many times the whole party died and Aveline killed the remaining enemies. It took long, but she did it. 

 

Aveline and Anders get honorary MVP rewards in terms of getting you through nightmare.
