I am barely level 4 but I don't have much space left in the inventory. But I am also a packrat and would hate to sell stuff that may be used later on, in some recipe maybe. Are items of "Type: Gem" like Malachite, Fluorspar, Quartz, etc., used for something or I can safely sell them? What about wolf pelts ("Type: Generic") ?

Since apparently, according to the manual, crafting in this game is limited to Alchemy, I don't suppose any recipe would need gems or hides?

Yes, I believe gems and hides are simply there to be sold. Also be sure to not if you have multiples of any weapons or armor, getting rid of those can get you a lot more cash and not make you lose out on something you're going to need.
