I think this game needs more mage companions. Your choices are Wynne, a goody-two-shoes healer specialist or Morrigan...who you get early enough to specialize as you like--but she has shapeshifter, which may not be your favorite mage spec.
It would have been really easy to let you choose between Wynne or one of the other two mages in the tower. Either of the others could have been specced as a great damge-dealer, controller, or debilitator...and given some more diversity to your companion choices. Also, why not let you actually save Jowan and get him to join you?
Sure, you only get two rogues as well, but one's a great archer and the other's pretty good dual-wield. That's basically everything you want to do with a rogue. Mage has far more versatility, but to explore it you have to play the mage yourself.
Warriors: Allistair, Dog*, Sten, Shale*, Ohgren
Rogues: Leliana, Zevran
Mages: Wynne, Morrigan
* extremely specialized warriors but still warriors.
Needs more mages

By the same logic, we also need more rogues, right?

I did find it a little strange that Jowan couldn't be recruited, especially if you were coming off of the mage origin story. I'm wondering if he was a possibility that just ended up getting axed at the end of development.
That being said, I don't think that the choices are that bad. Wynne is a great healer (especially if you are not a mage yourself), and you don't need more than one healer in a group (maybe a secondary healer, just in case, but you can make Morrigan do that). Also, characters coming with their own specialization makes sense, based on their own experiences. In terms of warriors, you really don't need more than one to tank, and then a rogue adds extra DPS. Plus whatever you are, which you have a lot more control over, so you can be more versatile.
It would have been nice to see more recruitable characters in the game for the sake of plot, but ultimately I think we got really good choices, and certainly enough to make a good team.

The only thing I'll say is that considering how crucial mages are to success--before release, the designers said you would struggle if you didn't have a mage in your group--it's surprisingly easy to hose yourself in this regard. Kill Wynne and refuse Morrigan, and you're looking at some tough fights in the last battle. Maybe that's why the Archdemon is so easy?

I did mention that there are also only two rogues...but rogues are DPS...either ranged or melee. You have one of each, so it's plenty. Mages can do far more than healing and being snitty pains in the hindquarters.

The reason that Jowan is not recruitable is because he is the mage tutor/assassin for Connor. He has a central part in the Redcliffe problem. Wynne you have already met at Ostagar. Morrigan you meet in the wilds. Basically, Bioware has given you a healer mage and a damage dealing mage with the ability to shapeshift. You get 2 2-handed warriors (Sten, Oghren). 2 Rogues (Zervan and Leilanna). Alistair (Shield and Sword), and Dog. Shale you only get if you download the DLC and Loghain you cannot get until late in the game.
Basically BioWare has given you the raw materials to make a good team without overbalancing one way or the other.
@Soteria
I play the last 75% of the game without any mage. I get Lelianna at Lothering and Zervan early. I spec myself as a rogue. At level 7 I take the Ranger specialization. I max out the PC rogue Hebalism talent. I max out Leilanna archery skills and give her points in Shealth. I max out Zervan and PC rogue Shealth ability. At level 14 Leilanna and Zervan get the Ranger specialization. All my warriors take one point in archery (melee archer). Playing without a mage is absolutely possible.

Certainly it's possible. People solo the game; why shouldn't it be possible without a mage? With a sufficient quantity of potions, I'm sure the mabari could solo the high dragon, as well. That doesn't mean the game isn't harder without mages.

I would like the anti-Wynne, mabey the blood mage later in the tower. Someone who plays it a little fast and loose with morals. Definately not Jowan though, I've had enough of fixing all of his problems and listening to his whineing.
And by anti Wynne I don't mean Morrigan, I mean a circle mage who hates the templars and chantry as much as I do and wants to help me plan my rebellion.

Tis true no doubt, but It would have been nice if after Redcliff if you could choose to "Release him in my charge" something like the option you were given for Sten.
He is infact a playable character but only in the Mage origin and the Fade at Redcliff (something that a Mod could probably manipulate and exploit to let him be a permanent companion. He has the 1st Bloodmagic spell (after his secret is out) and some hexes w/ lightning and arcane bolt. It was very difficult to defeat the Desire Demon. Lots of running, turn around throw a rock, run for your life, turn around and throw another rock, run some more......you get the idea.
He could be a formidable companion joining you so he could redeem himself like Sten
Cool idea: Have him join your party against the Templar's wishes resulting in random encounters of Templars comming to retrieve or kill him and your party.

I think there needed to be another archer companion personally, if you don't like leliana you're choices are greatly hampered in that area, there's way too many melee companions. It would have been great if Sten or Ogren was an archer warrior.
I also agree that Jowan would have made a great playable character.

Good point daddytat.
Or, if Jowan could man up, he could be my anti Wynne and help me plan to kick the chantry out of the Circle.
