Saw the film last night. It was surprisingly GOOD. After the last Terminator flop, I'd lost hope.
No, you're just easily pleased is all. The film is receiving mostly negative reviews across the board and has a 27/100 on Rotten Tomatoes. Everything post-T2 has been terrible and nowhere near the standards set by the first two films. This franchise doesn't need to be rebooted, it needs someone who actually cares about it and isn't afraid to do something new with it. It needs someone who is competent and isn't only there for the paycheck.
The terminators are a boring and outdated concept today. I know a lot of people will disagree with me there, but deep down you all know it's true. There is nothing more that can be done with them that hasn't been done already. So, looking at it from that perspective, why not continue where T2 left off? The terminators simply don't exist in the current timeline, so you have to start thinking about other ways to expand the universe and go beyond the terminators. If you don't do this you get stuck in a loop that you'll never see the end of. You'll rely entirely on the terminator gimmick for each movie you make and it will become more and more stagnant and unimpressive. That's exactly what has happened unfortunately.
Movie universes, like game universes, have to expand beyond just what's familiar in order to stay relevant. Every director that has taken over for this franchise has been scared to death of T2's ending. It's either briefly mentioned like it was in T3, or sidestepped entirely like it was in Salvation. They're scared of it because they don't know what to do with a movie that actually concluded the story. It means they would have to actually invent lore and create new ideas and concepts for their films instead of relying entirely on Cameron's work.
