How can anyone be better then Commander Shepard? Don't think BioWare can pull it off.

I think it would be hard to top Shep as the ultimate power fantasy figure. The character was OK for ME1 with its the "stranger in a strange land" or "accidental hero" type  of script line. Shepard was "special" in receiving the cypher providing a connection to the Prothean aspect involved in ME1.

With ME2 and ME3 though the character became an even more extreme power fantasy and I believe there is a tipping point of when that sort of character can have a debilitating effect on a franchise's potential and the series starts to lose a large degree of credibility, and invite ridicule or accusations of formulaic writing from those more critical of power fantasy type story mechanics.

As much as I liked Femshep (how many badass female Videogame-Heroes are there anyway?), and I would love to travel back in time to stop Bioware from ever creating Mass Effect 2 I think people will find some value in the next big thing...though I doubt it will become as big a hype as Shep became. An icon, a constant stream of memes etc...

This thread makes me feel like I'm in the minority for not really caring about Shep in any way, shape, or form.  I was mildly attached to my personal Shep, but I don't think that the series needs Shep nor do I think that s/he was really this amazing protagonist.

I am apathetic bordering on disliking Shepard. I appreciate the journey but that's more about ME being it's own thing than Shep being someone I liked in any way.

As much as i loved Jane, i'm completely 100% fine with a new hero.

Let Shepard go already.

Sometimes it feels like the community completely turned on Shepard :( My Shepard was an absolute goddess and I'll miss her dearly. I guess it depends how you play them, but my Shepard was super nice, friendly, and heroic, and downright ruthless to those who tried to harm her or the people she cared about. Deep down though she was just a normal human being though, put in a high stress situation that literally no one should have been burdened with on their own. That's why I don't care too much about Bioware's railroading in ME3. It actually fit my canon Shepard to have the Reaper war completely destroy her mentally and physically, but her and her crew keep going. It's why she also shoots the tube (well, that and why wouldn't you shoot the tube ) because she knows her duty, knows the sacrifices that need to be made by everyone to end the war, and its not like Shepard knew she was going to survive it.

My Shepard also never had a messiah complex like some people think Shepard did. The respect and praise she got from her crew was downright earned, and it's not like they all kissed her feet. Garrus failed at many things he tried to accomplish, but Shepard succeeded in the times he would have failed, so he loves her. Tali respects her for not being a xenophobe towards Quarians. Wrex doesn't kiss up ever, but he knows when one deserves respect. Liara is... let's not talk about her, she suffers from living a life of solitude until she met Shepard. I'm not going to list everyone here, but I think the messiah complex is overplayed just a teeny wheeny bit.

Shepard was what the players made him to be.

If they think he/she was a dick, that tells more about them, than about the default-shepard.

The default shepard was a model-soldier.

A little bit boring, not very original, with an iron will and good fighting skills.

Thats all about that default character.

My shepard stated several times that he's nothing but a soldier who did what was necessary to accomplish a mission and that he

is no freaking  hero. If he acted differend for other player they chose different answers/actions than i did.

My shepard was a ruthless bastard who only cared about his crew, and other than that tried to survive the varrenshit that destiny (aka Bioware) pushed him into.

He "saved the world" because no one else was there to do it and life is difficult when your galaxy is gone (aka Biowares savior-complex when it comes to what they think is an interesting story).

The only thing that people can complain about shepard is the little-dull-soldier-brackground.

Everything else is either a complaint about the mediocre story from Bioware or about their own playing-style.

Can i have my Mass Effect MMO now, please?

I would take it even without shepard.

I adore all my maleShep and femShep but their story is over, I'm 100% ready for a new protagonist - as long as they're even slightly more compelling than the Inquisitor.
