It seems to me that dwarves are taller than before. I noticed with Varric, he seems to come up higher compared to Hawke than he did in DA2. Dwarves used to be the size of DAO children, I distinctly remember feeling a bit awkward playing a dwarf in DAO when I realized I was nearly eye level with a little girl. I think dwarves in DAI would probably be about a head or so higher than DAO children now (I'm specifying DAO children because they were made to be taller like young teenagers in DA2). Actually, it seems like everything but humans have gotten taller. Elves are definitely taller too, humans used to be a full head taller than elves but in DA2 and DAI elves are nearly as tall as humans. Even qunari seem bigger, a female qunari in DAI is about as tall as Sten was in DAO and a male one is definitely as tall as he was. Humans used to be the second tallest race by quite a margin, being as tall to elves as qunari are to humans... But that seems to have changed. But the dwarves being bigger is what actually bothers me, I don't mind elves or qunari getting taller but dwarves getting taller doesn't seem right since shortness is one of their defining characteristics.

Am I wrong? Can someone succeed where I failed and find a proper size comparison with screenshots to figure out if I'm right about dwarves (and qunari I guess) being taller than in previous games?

If the dwarves are still shorter than everyone else, then it isn't a big problem.

True. But I'm not even sure if I'm right, which is partly why I'm asking. It could just be my imagination, so I want to know if others think so too. Or better yet, someone can find good comparison pics.

I don't think so, but I found dwarves getting taller... fascinating. Since you mentioned comparison, I decided to do it. It'll be totally unprofessional.

I'll use human females and dwarven males for this. I assume they use similar proportions between games.

DAO and DAI are the same.  Male dwarf reaches to the shoulder of female character. There's small difference in DA2. Dwarf (Varric) seems higher, but that's just because of the way Hawke stands.

Some of the ladies dwarf's fans I know, believes that the dwarf women has become shorter in Inquisition. I think the male dwarves are still the same size as they were in Origins.

So... It seems I was imagining it. Strange. What caused it, difference of camera angles or misremembering or what?

Oh that is surely not true! My dwarf Quizzy was the same height as Varric. If those beliefs were true, that would mean dwarven ladies were higher than man.

There are certain camera angles that make dwarves seem higher. It happens way often in cutscenes. I still remember my pt with dwarven lady that romanced Blackwall. In some cutscenes she was the same height as him.

Oh, I know what causes that. You ever seen the screenshots of some scenes with dwarves using flycam to make the camera be whatever they want? It shows the dwarf standing above the ground while floating, or during the bar scene with Blackwall about the dog the dwarf will somehow be sitting through the bench (to actually make the dwarf shorter, for some reason). Bioware did all kinds of weird positioning stuff in the cutscenes with dwarves, and it does indeed get ridiculous sometimes.

Good question. If it turns out that humans are taller too, that would throw out comparisons used with screenshots. I doubt it would be the case, but it is possible.

Unfortunately I have saves that allows me to compare only human female with male dwarf.

Someone else could try to compare other races. But which one? Dwarf with dwarf? Useless. Elves are known to change their look from game to game. Qunari are even worse that elves in that matter.

The only ones that seem to keep the same look are humans and dwarfs. That's why I used that for comparison.

But answering the questiong from first quote. Who knows? They can grow as much as they like... as long as they're smaller than qunari ladies.

I've been playing with Flycam long enough to see that.

I don't know how much work it would require to properly animate cutscenes for dwarves, but I think that's something to consider. Even if only for future title.

Don't recall in DA2, but in Origins, depending on the angle I talked to Oghren from in camp, he would end up either pretty much eye-to-eye with my female elf Warden, or at least eye-to-chin.  But on the other other hand, in this game, I feel like I'm always looking down at Dagna.

I don't remember how it was in DA:O/DA2, but in DA:I, human females are virtually the same height as human males, give or take an inch maximum. I took some screenshots specifically trying to test this, but I don't have them on hand right now. Will add later.

A little shorter, yes. Mostly just a lot more slender. They were stocky in DAO, but in DAI they look more like Halflings. :/

How tall does a dwarf have to be that he stops being a dwarf and becomes a short, stocky human?

How short human has to be to become just a tad taller dwarf?

And I do like non-racial pairings, but frankly, I've grown uncomfortable with how much they've shrunken down the dwarf female model. I feel like elves got a lot more acceptable because they got taller. They get all the benefits of animations working better and people are more likely to accept the pairing. The dwarf male came through unscathed, but the dwarf female took a nosedive. They got even shorter and lost their overall width, which was the very thing that defined them as dwarves and made them look like believable tanks.

In Origins, the male and female were very nearly equals in terms of height and width. In Inquisition, you can see the difference with Bianca and Varric. She looks like a hobbit now.

The dwarf female went up to the human male shoulders and her width was just as wide as the human body. Now look at the dwarf female standing next to Blackwall. The differences look ridiculous. I cringe during some cutscenes because sometimes she looks like she's a child.

All they had to do was fix the ape arms from DAO. That was it. =/

Maybe that's why I thought they were taller. Seeing a male dwarf after seeing a female one makes the male one look a little taller than they should.

I have to say I think Origins did it the best. Can't say I'm a huge fan of how weirdly small the female dwarves got compared to the males. If they made them both smaller, whatever. Also, I find it really odd that even though David Gaider thought it could be weird to have a female Dwarf romance Alistair because she could look like a little girl, in the next game where you could romance someone as a dwarf, they decided to...

*Drum-roll*

...make them look a lot more like little girls.

I don't know about you but I have often wondered about humans with the genetic condition we call dwarfism. Does it exist in the DA setting? Are they called something else? Does the father give weird looks to the nearest merchants guild rep? Does the dwarf child go to live in orzamar where he can fit in better? Is that what fantasy dwarves are, an evolved dwarf 'lepper colony' Probably a bit of a silly line of questioning but it just bugs me.
