It's not a matter of having to follow us.  It's a matter of their being around so long and being so much more advanced than us that if intergalactic travel were possible in a non-contrived way, the Reapers would almost certainly have discovered and used it long before now.

Also, while the Reapers were laughably incompetent in a lot of ways, I think they were supposed to be terrifyingly cunning.  Thus why Liara's theories of cycles of destruction were considered crackpot.

ANd yes, a soft reboot that ignores ME3 and the endings is, in theory a good thing.  I have no argument with that.  But relocating to Andromeda using some sort of intergalactic travel would just make me wonder "Why the Hell did no one think of this sooner?"

It would've been more plausible to have set ME:A in one of the dwarf galaxies that are much closer to the milk way, but "Large Magellanic Cloud" or "Sagittarius Dwarf" don't have quite the same ring or allure as Andromeda.

But the problem here is that you're constantly theorizing as the technology being a result of us and our galaxy. Why is that a required assumption? Why can't this be the result of technology from a civilization more advanced than the Reapers which was never found?

Ilos itself was a civilization the Reapers never visited/discovered because it wasn't listed in Citadel Records as being inhabited. And we have about a million other instances of the Reapers doing a pretty weak job of deleting records of their existence on top of that.

here are my concerns:

are the devs going to be honest?  this is going to be an action shooter with (hopefully) a good story.. this is NOT going to be a typical RPG like the witcher series or Mass Effect 1.  are they actually going to admit that before release? or are they going to try and appease both the RPG crowd and shooter crowd like they have in the past?

female characters are going to be she-males.  sorry.. but thats what they looked like mostly in their recent games with a few exceptions. Josehpine, vivianne, and Leliana looked decent.. the rest.. not so much..  i got no issues with them supporting the LGBT community like they do.  i just think they go overboard with it is all.

the dialogue system will be like inquisition.. IMO, the dialogue in DA:I wasnt very cinematic.. when i was having a conversation with a character, it mostly felt like i was eavesdropping while roaming the map.  it didnt feel like an actual conversation.  i hope they revert back to the old system.  that was MUCH better IMO.

and of course DLC.. are they going to be typical EA.. or are they going to try and follow CD Project Red.  im not expecting 16 free DLCs.. but can we finally get a game where the initial release has ALL of the story/mission content with nothing gated by a pre-order bonus or collector's edition bonuses..

Go back to older Bioware games too, long before the expanded romance options and it was even less. KotOR's cast had Bastila. Jade Empire had Dawn Star/Silk Fox. It's not inherently a LGBT issue, by any stretch.

A couple of reasons

1) If the technology was the result of a species in the galaxy more advanced than the Reapers, then it must either be over a billion years old.  In which case, why haven't the Reapers discovered and implemented it?

2) If it's  from outside the galaxy, then where is this race?  And why is Bioware introducing yet another godlike alien species?  And how will they resolve this race with the inevitable synthetic revolution?

Ilos was visited by the Reapers.  just not in the Prothean cycle, because as you noted, its records were destroyed, and thee Protheans there went dark and didn't draw attention to themselves.  However, the statues there are Inusannon, a race from the cycle before the Protheans, which were harvested.

Somewhat more plausible.  But it would still take years to reach those galaxies.  Which I suppose is better than centuries.

But still, ships need discharging facilities after a couple of days of running.  That's what makes the relay network so vital.

what about your player character and the rest of the female cast?  there may have been 1 or 2 options that looked feminine.. but most options in the character creator are far from it.

as for older games.. i thought they did pretty well.. i just didnt care for the look of most females characters (including the Player character) in Inquisition.  i understand others had no problem with it. to each their own.  but i have a right to my opinion, same as you.

I don't know what you're talking about, there were pretty many fluff NPCs that looked feminine and if you don't go into the Character Creator with Feet for Hands, you could make a feminine looking Inquisitor, even as Dwarf or Qunari. But this is off Topic and the Likes of you have been out-argumented long before by better People than me.

A couple of reasons

1) The technology could be recent. You're assuming here that the technology is over a billion years old, which isn't a given. But I go back to my earlier point: how bad have the Reapers been thus far about eliminating all traces of their existence? Multiple Prothean Beacons (Eden Prime, Virmire, another in ME2), Ilos, the Thorian, the Derelict Reaper, the Crucible Plans, so on and so forth.

2) Where were the Protheans at the start of ME1? Not to split hairs, but this isn't exactly the first time either in Mass Effect or sci fi that we'd be exploring the technology left behind from a dead race.  Of course, maybe the race in question isn't dead and had their own reasons for retreating/limiting contact. This could be a derelict vessel of a very much alive race (my preferred option) that we will soon encounter.

3) My primary point though is that their efforts to erase the time line have not worked, for a number of reasons. The idea that the Reapers would automatically detect a single derelict ship on an uninhabited planet is absurd given how many things we've seen them overlook.

There may certainly be other issues with regard to this story decision (lack of innovation, etc), but the criticisms that either the Reapers would have access to it or humanity would are fallacious, according to any interpretation of the in game story. The Reapers have demonstrated themselves to do a pretty bad job of cleaning up overall.

I don't understand why many posters continue to cling to the Milky Way and Shep's place in its history. Wether you like the endings or not the trilogy had to end. That's why it's called a trilogy.

Also, I see that many are hung up about Andromeda, how we got there, why we can't get there, on technology, the Reaper cycle, magic musshrooms, the Reapers and Andromeda,  we should stay in our own galaxy, we should have a sequel to explain what happened... etc.... Ooops, no magic mushrooms in ME just some sort of magic.

Honestly, I believe the above paragraph is the exact reason why Bio decided to start fresh. Reminds me of the pilgrims sailing from England to the New World. After that, it's all about the New World and their struggles. They forgot the Old World, England and the political religious wars.

Andromeda provides the Mass Effect IP with a huge potential in re-booting the franchise. The writers and producers can now take a hard long term view about the path they can take. Perhaps many paths such as stand alone games or more trilogies. All they need to do is to avoid boxing themselves in with a galactic scale apocalyptic scenario that makes no sense. Thank heavens they chose to concentrate on a single galactic cluster.... home of 100k+ stars. Many engaging stories can be told from this cluster alone... if they plan it well.

So, I say, let's look forward to more information about the game that will be coming along, as surely as night turns into day. We can all make up our minds soon enough.

Because they have a mandate to preserve all life.

1) I say it must be over a billion years old because the Reapers come in and harvest organic life well before they reach the point where they can surpass the Reapers. Therefore, if the tech originated in the Milky Way, it must have been before the cycles began, and thus before the Reapers.

I'd also say that despite seeming incompetence on the part of the Reapers it isn't until "The Shepard" stats investigating that the evidence really starts coming to the surface. (not that it gets listened to anyway)

2) The Protheans lost to the Reapers, though.  If you're saying this precursor race was wiped out, then what wiped them out?  And how can humans (and whoever else is along for the ride) hope to stand against it?  Will it mean building another Crucible?  If they're still alive, then, we are dealing with Ancient Precursor Race #3 (or is it four now?)

And again, it's not so much dealing with ancient technology as the problem of "Why didn't the Reapers have this too?" they've had far, far more time to discover or develop it on their own, unhindered, while the rest of the galaxy has had its development stunted for millions of years.

3) Are you suggesting some derelict spacecraft which humanity just happens across and the Reapers missed?  Honestly that sounds like a howler of a contrivance.  I'd sooner buy into research into wormhole technology.

So typical RPGs have a lousy inventory because that is about only commonality between ME1 and TW3. TW3 has become a straw man of what "good" RPGs are despite failing most of the tests people usually use for being a good RPG around here -- button mashing combat, limited spells , no race/gender choice and so forth. Gawk help the wrath of all the TW3 fans if Bioware actually did the things TW3 did.

1) But you still have not addressed this assumption. What's stopping this hypothetical advanced race from arriving from their galaxy in between either the most recent cycle or for the ship to go derelict on a planet which the Reapers have no reason to investigate? Again you're allowing for Ilos but creating an arbitrary distinction here which shouldn't exist, especially since we know the Reapers concentrate their efforts on civilizations according to Citadel records.

The tech doesn't have to originate in the Milky Way. And while we may not know how we reach Andromeda at present, that doesn't negate there being about a billion different scenarios for why the Reapers never found technology X on Planet Y. Just look at the Leviathans in the first place.

2) I think this is overcomplicating things a great deal. We don't need to make all these assumptions about the nature of this precursor race, which are unnecessary. What we have right now is the technology. Explanations come later, like most sci fi series. Maybe the civilization is dead, maybe it's alive. Maybe they're friendly, maybe they're hostile. The point though is we don't have enough info to say that the Reapers will ipso facto have reached other galaxies.

3) Considering we've already had it happen about a million times between derelict Reaper vessels, Ilos, the Crucible, and Prothean beacons, I'm gonna disagree. The Reapers completely ignored Ilos merely because it wasn't reported in Citadel Records, which makes any uninhabited planet game for an undiscovered derelict ship. I understand if you dislike the plot point period, but then this stops being an ending issue and starts becoming a "This is Mass Effect day 1" issue.

Who care about he political climate?

Plenty of people would like to see how the galaxy works in the aftermath of the reaper's it can easily be a compelling story.

                                                                                  <<<<<<<<<<()>>>>>>>>>>

Listen, the trilogy is ended. For me, it ended badly because of the multiple ending choices.  I liked non of them because Shep died, for all intents and purposes... You see? Shep's "universe" is dead... I say it again... Dead.... buried even... thrown into the sun.. down a black hole... whatever.

The writers have moved on. Forgive and forget... you will feel better. I certainly did!

Peace.

Wrong only Shepards story has ended but the MW at large still has lots of stories left to tell there's no need to move to another galaxy.

It would be interesting to see that, and I bet we will, just in the face of where we are in Andromeda.

To presume the galaxy is completely over their old grudges because of how things change would be kind of foolish. If the Krogan were cured by the Genophage how would their re-assimilation into the galactic community go? How would the Salarians be treated for obvious sabotage? Would the Turians be able to police the galaxy anymore or would it become human-centric further?

Those kind of questions we shall see answers in, but it will be in the peripheral of the experience in Andromeda I bet, meaning it will be in there, but not necessarily the main focus. What we will get in the end is the continuation of intergalactic politics while new threats pop up. You don't have to be in the Milky Way to have that being a part of the story.

Of course it can. People bring their politics with them. If Salarians come on our happy little voyage of course they'll be mistrustful of the Krogan (and the Krogan will probably thoroughly dislike the Salarians as well). Just because we aren't in the MW doesn't suddenly mean all the racism rampart in ME thus far is going to just up and disappear. Politics is created by people, not places, and when the people go somewhere the politics goes with em.

The Genophage Cure might be one of the few things Bioware actually accounts for in the import. That could very easily happen before the Andromeda launch while still leaving time for the Ark to leave before Priority: Earth.

DA:I was done by a completely different team the the ones who did ME3 not to mention if Bioware did learn from them they wouldn't be setting the game in another galaxy.

The fact Bioware is setting the game in another galaxy doesn't inspire confidence that they have learned from it.

Which has no connection whatsoever to them moving the setting

Andromeda is also set centuries after ME3 IIRC. Sure, salarians might be a bit mistrustful of krogan, but there's no way their relationship would be exactly where it left off in the MW. Politics may be created by people, but they're prompted by the environment. Land, wealth, and governance disputes would all be totally different in a new setting, especially after so many years.
