To me, that's obvious marketing bla bla to say "you get to create your own" / "This guy is clearly male, but your hero could be female" / "What happens in the trailer won't happen in the game as it is presented".
I find it quite a long shot to go from such a simple statement to "there will be two central characters".
If there is, there better be some goddamn SP coop.

To me that doesn't sound like marketing speak for "you can make your own character", it sounds like the player character and the N7 trailer dude are two separate characters. They also included at the end of the announcement concept art of a female/male human duo, who are not wearing N7 armor. That seems to imply the player character isn't actually N7, which would be in accordance with the leaks.
