So this is an old thread on Raptr but thought It would be interesting to hear peoples views on here, and see if there are any builds I'd like to try.

I love the many possible builds for the Mage class, plus I just love wielding magic! BUT the mage origin is a little boring unfortunately, not much action bar a few spiders and sentinels.

I know there is a mod but I think a Dalish Mage (Keeper) should have been integrated.

So, I'm going to have to go with Human. Whether they are a Warrior or Rogue is a tough one... I like being able to open chests from the word go and you get an extra sidequest in Denerim, but I don't like NOT being a tank if not using magic.

Spell Mage: Blood Mage, Spirit Healer & Keeper

Melee Mage: Blood Mage, Arcane Warrior & Battlemage

Tank Warrior: Champion, Templar & Guardian

Warrior: Reaver, Berserker & Spirit Warrior

DW Rogue: Assasin, Dualist & Shadow

Archer Rogue: Ranger, Bard & Legionnaire Scout

I would have liked to have seen an origin story to play as a Golem or Qunari (Possible mod idea... anyone?  )

Regarding the race, and knowing not a lot of people share my opinion, the origin story I enjoyed the most was the Dwarf Noble one. I really liked how it unfolded, and loved how Bhelen used your character in order to get to the throne (that bastard... xD). Also, I liked seing Gorim again in Denerim's market, gotta love him.

And as for the class and specializations, I've always liked being the tank, so Warrior is my preferred class, with Champion and Berserker, adding Guardian in Awakening, as specializations.

I really liked the Human (Warrior or Rogue) origin story as well, and as you say, although I like being able to open any chest I encounter, I prefer being a warrior, so I usually end up having Leliana always with me.

The time I chose a mage as my main character I picked Shapeshifter and Blood Mage. Still haven't played Awakening with this Warden, so I'll see what other specialization I choose.

Curious, why Shapeshifter? I've always stayed clear, the only thing I've found useful is travelling whilst a Swarm.

I completely forgot to mention the specs in Awakening. I'll edit now.

It depends for me I have two ways of playing, ruthless or complete.

Ruthless, does as it says - I play an unrelenting Warden, favouring all things ME! Anyone else's problems aren't mine.

Complete, I help everyone, do every side quest and more!

Ruthless Team: Zevran, Sten, Morrigan/Oghren/Loghain (The nasty team)

Complete Team: Alistair, Wynne, Leliana (The nice team)

Although it's true Shapeshifter doesn't really have any astounding features as other specializations have, I really liked the concept, so I went with it. I guess that what I like about it are not the perks it gives you, but the concept and lore stuff it entails. Also, the transformations have helped me in some situations when I needed a little bit more of muscle.

My ideal group is formed by Morrigan, Leliana and Oghren. That old drunkard dwarf is too great to not have him in my party.

Haha! I am an Oghren fan too.

My ideal group would include Shale (if I'm a mage) but I really don't like her structuring where you have to switch modes to use melee or ranged attacks.

I'm sure I've seen a mod somewhere to make the shapeshifts a little more exciting, e.g. changing into a dragon - If Flemeth can, why shouldn't I be able to?!

Yeah, Shale is a good option to have in the group as well, but it's true that switching modes is a bit of a pain, although it makes things a bit more challenging xD And her hate for pigeons is pretty funny.

And Oghren... how could someone not love him? Seing him again in Awakening made me really happy haha

Suppose, I've play through so many times that pausing every 10 nanoseconds has gotten a bit tiresome. I've started relying on the tactics a little too much on some playthroughs.

I use some tactics as well, but I prefer to pause and unpause. I guess being the one manually controlling the characters and telling them what to do makes the game more... appealing to me. I really like to stop and think of what to do next: where I position them, what spell is the better one to use now, what kind of combos can I make at that moment... Some combats can be very long this way though.

I completely agree, just sitting there, watching your team do all the work, you'd may as well watch a movie.

I always use tactics for sustainables and potions however. (And if I have one, my healer - apart from when things get critical - I just find healers to be boring.)

No surprise, but my favorite by far is Shapeshifter/Arcane warrior. Both specs scale to spellpower, so it's really the best choice IMO for a high spellpower build. I get around the low damage a shapeshifter normally gets with Bear/Spider by stacking critical chance/damage on my shapeshifters equipment for those two forms. It's also a lot of fun to change into the forms.
