Yeah, it would be nice to see more "realism" with translators. Like non-perfect translations and the occasional weirdness.

Star Trek has the occasional Klingon word that doesn't translate - regularly the word "petaQ" makes it through their UT, which roughly translates to useless/garbage, but it's also a curse word, which means there are other nuances to the word that don't make it through a literal translation.

Mass Effect doesn't have a real universal translator - the translator needs to be programmed with the relevant languages to work, it won't magically work out new species like Star Trek translator.
So if we're First Contacting Andromeda species, we shouldn't understand them

Like give them totally different customs. Perhaps flipping the bird is agreement. That could cause some fights initially.

All good sci-fi requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. Language is one of those points. I don't think they should spend any amount of time on it because they will never come close to the problems that would come from having multiple languages/social constructs in real life.

Isn't the OP's point that the writers could at least look at this issue as a plot mechanism, at least think of tryng to give players a sense of the confusion and mystery that comes from meeting a totally new species, one whose language and/or other means of communication can't be dealt with by an universal translator? It could be fun.
