That depends on how thorough you want to be. If you intend to collect all the shards and do the Solassan Temple, no, you're going to need a mage because two of the shards in the Western Approach require you to energize bridges. Nor will you be able to complete Keeping the Darkspawn Down on the Storm Coast. But if you mean "get through the main quests and only enough side quests to gain the necessary power," yes, you can make do without mages.
Playing on nightmare without barrier might be interesting, but I'm sure some people have managed it.

Last time I played, I had farmed more than 700 silverite before finding my first "guard on hit" silverite. Fade-Touched Obsidian isn't as good as the FT silverite, but it is a more accessible option.

I find the easier way to find a deposit and save / load till it drops.

Yes, it is possible to get a solo win as any of the classes, so it follows that you can complete the main quest without mages.
But why, mages are awesome (says he who always plays a mage as the canon main character)?

If you have JOH- there is a Fade Rift that is near the camp northeast of the starting camp- where you can farm it.

Just doing a playthrough as a templar with an anti-mage bias =p
You really think you can roleplay as an anti-mage character in this game?

There are several opportunities to express anti-mage views during the game. Most of them come during the In Hushed Whispers / Champions of the Just segment early on, but they're still there. There is also the option of not recruiting Vivienne, Dorian, and Cole if you're that against mages or anything fade-related.
I suppose the best path would be to play a warrior that takes the templar spec. Also, even if you're planning to recruit the templars, you might have some fun RP by going to talk to the mages anyway and then just being aggressive with everyone in all of the dialogs -- you can tell Connor you would have killed him and so forth.
A warrior, templar, Andrastian Trevelyan who is a total zealot and truly believes they are the Herald of Andraste is totally doable with the actual dialog presented in the game. I think this concept works best with a Trevelyan, but the options are still there for a non-human.

Exactly what I'm going for, human male templar that goes along with the herald thing.
