Why do New Yorkers think they're so special? I don't mean to pin point you, but people from New York are generally...ass holes. Just my experience. They think they're special and precious and the world revolves around them.
Blame the transplants!
All the damn white yuppies/hipsters who move here think they got to be all rough and tough to "make it" in the big bad city and so they're the ones who have all the horrible attitudes and disgusting manners because they think it makes them a "true New Yorker".
Native New Yorkers are generally really down to earth. I've encountered way more nice and courteous people in the most ghettoa** neighborhoods than I have in guddamn northern Brooklyn. It's disgusting.
Even the tourists are more rude! Just because this city has a history of gangs and what have you, for some reason all the crackers who step their foot here think they got to act like a bunch of nasty pricks.
Sure, there are plenty of old hardened New Yorkers who may have an attitude problem but that's them either being psycho or just uber bitter and really tried of bullsh*t (thats why they say don't live here too long lol). The kind of entitled brats you're describing, that's all on the yupsters who moved to NYC from somewhere else to either become a finance bro or make their pseudo counter culture dreams come true and just because they've been living here for 6 months they think they can disregard all forms of common courtesy and become utterly self-aborbed. Smh
edit: I've met plenty of very nice and wonderful transplants so obviously I'm generalizing, but it a bit overboard to generalize all 8 million plus New Yorkers' as a-holes when its a certain breed of non-natives who are notoriously giving the city the specific bad rep you're referring to...

I have to kind of feel sorry though for someone who needs that to "de-stress". They must have some nasty sh*t to deal with if they resort back to preschool mentality.
All I need is a good movie. Maybe a bag of Sour Patch Kids.
The only time I resorted to childlike state, I was almost gunned down by the Mexican mafia... They got raided and thought I was the one who ratted on them. After that, I reassesed my life... and started hugging my parents like a child again.
But I got past it.

I used to be a bully. They're not that cool. This is also why I turned "childlike" briefly, in my story above. The guilt was killing me.
