Japan has giant robot animes, America has Boston Dynamics. I can't lie to the Japanese about what their chances look like if this battle robots thing catches on, but they have my sympathy.

The real winner will be the fans.

Still, I hope they paint them up really nice. I'd lose it if they made them look like Gundams, Evas or Transformers.

While at first glance this might be a good thing, what it really means is that we're on the inevitable path towards the Moonlight Butterfly....

So?

It won't be the first time an American beat the Japanese at their own thing.

I'm still more concerned about shape shifting metal aliens that have a knack for making your MS their's.

It's because they have violent names for the robots. Obviously names born from the patriarchy.

I like giant robots as much as the next guy, but I have never gotten the logic behind Japan's mecha (I know logic from cartoons/comics).

Why are (almost) all Japanese depictions of giant robots humanoid robot/samurai? It is incredibly inefficient to try and make something that large into a bipedal humanoid.

Also why make a giant 50 - 100 foot tall robot ninja, and then make a 50 - 100 foot tall sized sword or gun for them to carry? It makes no sense. Why not just have the stuff built into the framework of the design?

I prefer the western battle mechs for this reason. My internal logic doesn't go 'tilt' (as much) when I am playing a game like Mech Warrior as it does when I play Armored Core.
