I've observed some interesting behaviour from PUG's that extends beyond the standard repertoire of rage (quitting/missiling/medigel/..).
Any similiar observations?


Sidenote - We know that some primitive brain - the Corpus Callosum takes over from the main lobes (circa > 100 times),because big mama is lazy (prefer less decisions) and save power - and so "habits" come to life, habits are very seldomly rewired/reassessed - so some stuff is "hidden" even from ourselves:

Categories include :

1) Logic vs Emotion

Example - Often witnessed from newer players (all ages). Veterans not excluded, but usually after the waves halfway mark. Basal emotions displayed/unsurpressed : shouting, swearing, rage.
Driven by - Instinct
Results in - Hectic behaviour

2) Fight vs Flight

Example - Glacier basement Hacking Objective, 2 Bosses+ Aggro Hazard Swarm (see waypoint thread) and staying on even if all odds are against you.
Driven by - sense of obligation and not seeing the wood from the trees
Results in -
a) Hectic revival and bulk Medigel wastage
b ) Missile launching into a corner that only changes the Banshee's Hairstyle

c) team death or wave solo

3) Gossip vs Mobbing

Spoiler

Example - Outsider joining a match with 3 talkative buddies who are sharing mountains of gossip. An "alpha" dog that is usually better than the other two combined. The match usually runs fluid until a newcomer outscores the alpha in a wave. Turf/p contest kicks-in.
Driven by - self-preservation of (mob-dignity?)
Results in -

Distractive behaviour

a) playing music/singing/burping/ talking when all three buddies died - probably hoping that the outsider doesn't survive the wave as well.

b ) running aimlessly around with pizza

4) Contest vs Fair share Team Contributions

Example - prominently witnessed in Youtube video's as incessant score checking at the end of the wave.
Driven by - establishing the own pace to be top score, or increasing pace to not be one of the bottom 2

Results in -
A BotB/DAWG/Veteran will usually respond like this :

7a) civilly quits after two rounds of taking 3rd/4th place (shame?) or

7b) subsequently swaps to a GI Acolyte / Krogan Battlemaster / Fury/ TGI+Harrier and goes in guns blazing,

- seldom reviving fallen comrades,

- stealing kills outside the hacking zone,

- actively increasing spawns during objective waves by grooming enemy units instead of supporting objective

- stalking & slyly reverts to detonating/sabotaging primed enemies from unsuspecting rookies, (sabotage = willful overwriting the prime to another force biotic/cryo/technic). (primary tactic of well-known veteran BSN'er)

- cherry picking mooks around bosses and expertly timing the moment to kick-in with a worn-down boss for the final "killing" blow.

- distinctive reload cancelling in every wave,(some do it anyway - but then it really is displayed as an art of timing

+....--> taking all possible corners in 11 waves, but guaranteed quit only after the score board results were shown.

5) Group Think vs Realism

Example - All participants have banners, so we assume the match will be done in 15 minutes, so it is safe to medigel/missile /self-revive early
Driven by - Overconfidence
Results in - wipe-out in wave 10.

6) Classification vs Determination
(the confirmation Bias thing)

Example - We prefer to see patterns where there are none.
Driven by - having too small a statistical population selection group (irrespective of # wave evidence)
Results in -

• running open-eyed into a loving bosses' arms that was not supposed to be there.
• believing that the dragoons, phantoms, nemesis, banshees are spawning wave after wave and just hunting you specifically (ignoring all the rest).
• the the BSN store secretly know which weapons you are looking for and withholding just that.
• that making a special side+fwd roll with a smashdept in front of a phantom will somehow confuse her.

7) Win-Win Allegiances vs Us-Them

Example - Supportive talk during match increases the team glue, confidence and performance, especially for non-veterans.

Realism heroes mostly find talk, during "work", as distraction and prefer

i) silence together with
ii) going at it "when everyone else fails" to
iii) "save the day" / confirm who's best irrespective of CP/N7. This needs to be done in a endless loop.

Sometimes Realism Heroes likes to nudge the odds just a wee bit - by kiting enemies slightly/ missiling early in objective waves, which results in 3 noobs going into a "revive" frenzy and spectacular death. This is cherry on the cake - the sole survivor can be "hero" and have 3 others "observe and learn"

in contrast, Win-Win DAWGs

are bored with brute-force winning, and try to optimize a smooth landing for all - Evident from veteran pro-actively noticing weakest link and compensating (ie setting up primes, watching the back of the spatially unaware, ...)
It takes a rare & unique veteran to trade-in 1) own wave score towards 2) "silent orchestration".
Driven by = 1+1+1+1 (individual capability) = 5 (final outcome)
Results in -
a) Increased cohesion & team play in latter waves. primes+detonates, coordinated combined fire against bosses.
b ) Balanced Scores -
c) Fans for multiple rounds

If I have top score and another player at least appears to be "good" I get worried

I play on PC so I can ignore any observations there that involve talking (at least not very often)...

The solution I've found, when clutching a round in that situation, is to politely announce over the mic that if they don't shut the f*** up with the b***** mic spam you'll continue to kite the last enemy until they quit (added points if you announce that in a Sarf-East Englund accept ... which I happen to have, which helps).

I usually score a lot in pugs, but I don't go for score in expense of the others most of the time. Actually I end up doing most of the objectives and getting the most revives too (sometimes a downed teammate doesn't even get a chance to fully hit the dirt)

Is it a time panic or credit greed I have to wonder. With a maxed manifest its easy to not worry about those 2k time bonus credits as the most we have to worry about is the store trolling us by giving us cyro #s256-300 instead of a cyclonic 4 when we're at 225 and just wanted to resupply. For a newer player though those few extra credits could be the difference between the next upgrade or a new kit/weapon leading to that I have to get it override of patience.

 

On topic guilty of more than I want to admit on the list

One can show that one is a modern man, not an unreconstructed sexist, by leaving the grills to bleed out just as much as the guyz.

Let's see, I'm guilty of:

1. When BS space magic happens, I let the expletives fly

4. I will periodically check score throughout the game. Regardless of where I am, I'll still be the first to go for an objective or revive a teammate. This may cause me to play more aggressively at times, but I've been playing this long enough to realize credits > score

7. I am my puggers keeper. If I notice someone struggling or running into a bad spot, I'll have a missile ready for the inevitable insta-kill. Also, this weird phenomenon happens by Wave 3 where I'll notice the PUGs are following me around like a lost puppy
