Throughout DAO you get choices that can be Good or Evil. Apart from the reactions of your companions is there any long tern consequences if you choose an Evil or Good path.

Not particularly. The biggest thing it affects is the relationship (Approval or Disapproval) of your companions, some companions will leave if they hate you A LOT (or they may even turn on you) similarly you will get small bonuses if they like you a lot (augmentation of stats) and with good approval it can open up companion quests and romancing.
There are some choices which will allow you or disallow you to recruit non-core members.
I tend to play either good or evil, and these are the best teams I've found to have if you don't want objections in your choices:
Evil: Zevran, Sten, Morrigan/Oghren/Secret Companion
Good: Alistair, Wynne, Leliana
If you want to playthrough doing all the sidequests I suggest taking the good team - Sten and Morrigan just love questioning why you're helping people!

It's easy to gain approval from Morrigan and Zevran and I take them anyway even when I know my action will get disapproval on the particular occasion. I can get their approval over ninety by mid game. I absolutely leave Alistair, Leliana and Wynne behind if I know they won't like my decision (although Alistair will still disapprove even when he is not in the party when it comes to Redcliff quest.) I find them very hard to please and easy to offend.
Apart from that, I guess you will have to keep the anvil if you want the Golem army at the final battle, which I find them immensely useful. If you decide to kill Whitefang and werewolves, you get a nice amulet that gives 50% protection against nature damage and Zathrian will appear as your ally when you battle the Archdemon.
