Penny Arcade: DAI vs The Witcher ... Horses

As usual, well played on their part. The careful line really sells it.
One, take a topic that's minor in both games -- games which have passionate fanbases and are obviously going to be compared -- and then play it against each other so everyone wins. DA fans can point and say: "See, they liked that aspect of our game better". Then Witcher fans can say: "See how hardcore, and awesome our horse comes off compared to yours?".
Kudos.

Funny, but there's really no challenge here. Roach is waaay better than the useless mount system of DAI.
Having seen some Witcher 3 gameplay, I agree with this.

Funny, but there's really no challenge here. Roach is waaay better than the useless mount system of DAI.
How is it useless exactly? You climb the mount, ride it, look cool, get to where you want, dismount.
Were you expecting something else? It's really unfair to compare the two games in how they approach mounts. DAI focuses on mount cosmetics, while TW3 focuses on mounted combat.
So following your "useless" description, I assume you want the (fun!) mounted combat like in TW3 because ... besides mounted combat, what aspect would mounts serve in a combat-based game?
The game is designed around squad-based gameplay. How would that fit?
What about abilities? Should they all be able to be used while mounted? Last I checked, DAI is not a twitch game like TW3. How would mounted combat work?
Would a rogue be able to stab people while mounted?
If one person is mounted, and the rest aren't, when does everyone mount and when does everyone dismount? Would you have to do it manually if you don't want them all to mount and dismount? Isn't that tedious?
What about movement during combat? How can you be able to reliably pathfind all characters on a mount given the game's already shaky AI?
What about performance impact? Animating the party in real time is more taxing than you would assume. You'd have to animate their mounts as well.
There are potential solutions for all of those, but that would require a lot more effort than what was allocated. How many people do use mounts to begin with? Is the cost really worth it?
Are mounts in DAI remotely a priority to begin with? How can it be useless compared to another game that actually focuses on it.
Would it be fair to call TW3 character roleplaying useless because it's essentially nonexistent beyond dialogue and quest choices? Hardly.

I dont use horses in DA:I. The PS4 Controller button is awkward for riding in DA and it doesn't feel like you are going faster.
Dont mind not having a horse in DA.

Curious how this will be addressed in the next patch. I do like decorating the horse though, but I also like mount variety. Horse isn't beating my lovely halla-type mount.

Well you could compare if horses would be actually useful. Did someone really use horse in DA:I there is nowhere to ride for horse to be useful.
And Roche would win vs any DA horse. ![]()

I rarely use mounts in DA:I. And honestly, I hardly call roach to ride her in the Witcher (Geralt used "she" when talking about Roach in a convo, so I will refer to the horse as female). Then I got a new Roach because of a certain quest choice and I like that Roach even less. I just run or fast travel from point to point.

In theory, Roach is the superior steed. Too bad he's a complete idiot.

The HUGE advantages to using your mount in DAI are in two situations:
(1) Enable access to locations that are otherwise difficult/impossible by "leaping" up walls. (I love exploring the boundary ridge of Lady Shayna's Valley, for example.)
(2) Leaping down from ridges/mountains in ways that would otherwise result in an almost total loss of health while being reset to the starting location. A huge time-saver.

Must try that to get to that sack over a wall in Redcliff.
BTW, Geralt always uses mares and calls them all Roach. His best friend took a while to realize of that.

snip
DAI horses are useless, because they don't give you any real benefit.
They are just barely faster than walking, but don't let you interact with the world in any way. Additionally the maps are often so dense that the distances you need to travel are pretty small. Which means calling the horse, getting on it in a lengthy animation, riding there and getting of the horse often takes longer than just walking there.
In the Witcher 3 Roach is fast. And that's really good, because that's what horses are there for,

I do use mounts a fair bit, since it does let me avoid low-level encounters that don't offer any benefit. Western Approach hyenas, I'm looking at you.

Is roach a giant war nug? She's not? Well I guess we know who won there, then.
More wasted resources that would have been better spent on improving the game.

I do as well. Plus I'm a big horse fan. The artists outdid themselves. Love the look, just wish they were a tad faster.

What annoys me the most is those ridiculous contrails around DAI's mounts as you gallop, like it's breaking the damn sound barrier even though you're barely going faster than an ordinary sprint.

Haven't player Witcher, but on topic of DAI having useless mount system I somewhat agree. They are nice add, there is huge variety and so on, but do I really use them? No. I can't do anything when I'm on mount other than travel and I don't really need mount for travelling (expect in that one unnecessary huge map), I can run, collect materials, loot and quest when I'm on my way, if I'm lucky I get bit of party banter (still bugged for me) and I can do combat. I feel like I'm missing stuff when I'm on mount.
