What could have changed in terms of technical limitations between the original release and now?  I think we can be almost certain that they're doing this more from a marketing/financial standpoint as opposed to any technical limitations.  They're making the choice to abandon the last gen consoles and it's a frustrating and sad thing to see.  Support encompasses all things, including content, especially when this could have strong ties to the story.

What could have changed? A lot. For starters - they don't have as big of a dev team anymore. Likely they also don't have as much money.

Also - who said they'd just "abandon" old-gen consoles. Patches and multiplier additions so far seem to be rolled out for everyone. And it's not like they'd be giving new, substantial DLC for free to anyone, together with a cookie and a pat on a head... New console and PC players won't get anything, unless they actually pay for it.

I find this a rather lame move, and the blog post gives me Rise of the Tomb Raider flashbacks. "Good news, everyone! No product for some of you!"

Also, giving old gen consoles the boot does not automatically mean higher quality DLC.

I also doubt that the evil EA overlords enforced this measure with their dreaded iron fist. Battlefield 4 runs on Frostbite 3 and didn't sucker punch old gen player, they're getting more content like everyone else. It obviously can be done.

Those aren't technical limitations though, like I said, it seems like it is influenced more-so from a financial standpoint.  Also to be quite frank, that's not the consumers issue.  They bought a product and they should be able to trust in what they were sold and not be but cut out of the equation.

............

New console and PC players won't get anything, unless they actually pay for it.

Exactly, they're given the option and ability to buy and play the DLC.  Something which will be severely lacking in the future for older gen consoles.

As a pc player this is good news for me. Maybe we will get back some of thoses things that was cut?

As a PC player myself, it has made me determined to never, ever buy a console if cr*p like this is considered acceptable business practice.

I mean, I thought the timed exclusivity of JoH was pretty low.  But this is, if anything, worse.

"Yeah if you want any more DLC, you have to buy a second copy of our game.  And a new console"

WTF?  If you release a game on a given console you SUPPORT it!  Seriously, it's stuff like this that gets EA associated with the Dark SIde.

Exactly. Dragon Age: Inquisition came out in 2014. It's not unreasonable to assume EA would keep supporting the game equally across all platforms, rather than expecting people who bought their copy on PS3 or 360 to re-buy the game on another platform to have access to the new and old DLC. I know about Jaws being free if you bought it on the old gen consoles, but what about the item packs?

Dear EA/Bioware.

I think it's a downright dirty thing y'all did to last gen owners. They bought your game at full price. They should get a discount if you want them to buy it again. Please EA/Bioware, do the right thing. They wouldn't have bought your game if they knew this was going to happen.

It's so bad. The gaming press needs to speak out against these practices.

It's quite possible that the things they want to accomplish with the dlc (large scale Qunari battles, maybe?) couldn't have been done, or done well, for last gen. So the limitations haven't changed, but Bioware wants to do their ideas justice instead of having them look a bit rubbish or not do them at all. In a post Witcher 3 world, Bioware has to be more competitive than ever or DA as a franchise risks becoming obsolete to a lot of gamers (not to me, but hey the comparisons are out there and are pretty much constant). So Bioware may have upped their scope in that context.

As a PC user I feel really really sorry for all old gen console players.

My PC is a little old and I had to spend $150 for a new video card so to be able to play this game smoothly. How would I feel if they said "Well, now if you want to see the final piece of the game you must upgrade your CPU and add 8 GB of RAM". Game specs/supported platforms should only change between a game and another, not between pieces of the same game. Because we all knows that those DLC are not just "optional side content" but they will be part of the full story.

But releasing DLC isn't support. It's developing new content.

People should keep in mind that DAI was supposed to be released in 2013, during Ps4 and One release (if Not earlier). It'd have been a high risk for Bioware to release the game on next gen only, Not to mention that when They started development They probably didn't know when exactly the new consoles would've been released.
So Bioware likely put too much work on old gen to scrap them after the year delay.

Yep, that's always the risk of releasing games in a new platform launch window - you either cater to the old hardware with a large install base and risk not being cutting edge, or you risk being cutting edge but not have a large install base, or you try and do both at the same time which is what they did. TW3 was clearly better off for sticking to fewer platforms and new hardware.

If there's not enough manpower or money to deal with coding more complicated pieces of game on PS3/Xbox360, then it IS a technical (as well as financial) limitation.

Also - consumers bought a product for the product itself, and not any future upgrade or feature. Just like I bought iPod Classic from Apple for its disc space, despite Apple NOT providing any further software updates or features for the device.

Should I cry about that, or that I can't buy cool new accessories? No, I knew that I was buying an older device for which they'd eventually drop support.

And for a good reason. We all knew that this is eventually going to happen. This is also why I'm haven't been buying new games for my own PS3 anymore. At some point I knew that either the games are going to drop support or I won't be able to get everything PC/nex-gen players will get.

This may sound cruel and selfish, but I'm glad they decided to do this.

Now they won't be held back by last-gen anymore.

True. I just think last gen folks should get a discount if they already bought the game.

@Iakus this is not EA...BioWare has to take the hit for its own shortcoming. Madden16 is releasing 8/25...EA is still supporting last-gen.

@Zatche "new content" based on a base game cliffhanger...the base game is not finished.

I'm not affected, not really, okay maybe a little...and totally my fault...lousy timing, I gave my PS3 copy to charity, I jest not, on Monday. My completionist play through is on PS3, but I have a PS4, though the thought of doing another full run...haven't managed yet.

Still as a person with any hint of moral integrity, this is just so wrong.

Wow. Wow. This is one of the shittiest moves I have ever seen.

Aside from the fact that it's extremely bad to just leave some of your fanbase and customers hanging like this, with a playthrough they won't be able to completely finish and therefore containing an incomplete story; they didn't even bother to give a real explanation. None. It's just like "oh hey every bit of DLC from now on won't be available for the last-gen consoles great right". At least tell us why.

I mean I bought a PS4 prior to Inquisition's launch but this pisses me right off.

Yes it is.  If you offer new or altered content, even for a fee, it's support.

This is leaving last gen owners hanging.

When the Director's Cut of Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released, I was able to pick it up for like five bucks because I owned a copy of the game as well as its "The Missing Link" DLC.  And that wasn't even a platform change.

I think that's the absolute least Bioware could do, given their forcing a bunch of their players to buy a new console.

Free digital copy with a registered lastgen copy would be better.

Sure Bioware never made any promises but most old gen players had the (reasonable) expectation that they will be able to purchase more content at some point even if the game runs poorly so I understand why they are upset.

We have yet to see if the new DLCs will truly benefit from this decision from a technical/quality content standpoint. I'm hoping it will be the case, but it's not a guarantee either. Hard to say until we play it really, or get more infos.

Content, not numbers. You could probably run Doom 2 on 8K display with bambillion fps, but it would be Doom 2 with the same mechanics and level design.

Would you be so kind to explain how exactly the 'content' part was affected by the cross-gen release? Which past-gen-specific gameplay, mechanics and content drawbacks had the PC and next-gen players suffered?

It's all about  FPS, resolutions, textures and shaders, really. New consoles have more memory and more cpu powers, but that 'supapower' can be easily compared with a mid-class 2yrs old 'gaming' laptop (not even trying to compare them with the top gaming desktops). I don't see how the 'content' part is any involved here.

If the new dlc isn't somehow technically impressive and this was done for financial reasons, that is a bigger slap in the face to last gen users

That will depend on what percentage of purchases were on last gen consoles. If that number was low, that may be why they feel justified in making this shift.

Madden 16 is a terrible example, that series has only marginally improved over 10 years of iterations.

Oh, I think not, each system is still getting 22 players on the field.

And, as Varric said..."Point, missing it, oh well."

While I'd be willing to buy a new copy for PC my computer sucks and probably doesn't have enough room for it. I have a total of 21.3GB on my hard drive and only 3.24 free. It's honestly ridiculous; I have the new version of the HP and it has even less space than the previous HP I had. I'm more mad at my computer than I am at BioWare, to be honest.  :?

Though of course I do think it's ridiculous that I would have to by a new copy anyway. It's one thing if BioWare didn't release the game for 360 and PS3 in the first place, but they DID, so I'd expect the DLCs to be available for those consoles as well.
