Just starting DAMP... Recommendations on classes to build up inventory?
#1
Posté 07 juillet 2015 - 12:19
Are there any recommendations folks have for classes to get started with? It seems that this iteration of Bioware MP (more so than ME3MP) is very gear dependent, so it seems like I should be focusing on getting as much gold and drops as possible.
Any other suggestions or thoughts on the subject are welcome. Thanks in advance for the help!

Friends are the answer.
A large friends list will allow you to talk to others (have mike/headseat?), learning all sorts of things about the game, plus will allow you to play with them on higher levels giving you more xp and gold, resulting in promotions and buying chests for better gear.
From the tone of your post, I bet you won't have any problems finding friends.
There are lots of very cool people here.
Good luck, and Good Hunting.

Any of the long range characters are good until you get decent gear/weapons to equip your warriors better. But yeah, getting friends is a really good way to get good experience.

Friends make everything better.
Keeper is a great class to get rolling with. Everybody loves Barrier.
Lego is a great warrior to start with, and the new support xp from taunt should be a boost.
Archer is prolly the best rogue for new players, pretty straightforward.
Check out build guides, figger out what works best for you, and play the game.
Have fun.

You mention having unlocked an Elementalist.
He may very well be your step up in difficulties, both to Threatening and Perilous eventually. He and the Keeper were definitely some of my major go-to's (and still are for Perilous).
Keeper's got decent damage. I like Chain Lightning and Static Cage, and naturally Barrier will help you and also help others you catch in its range by giving you a little extra protection.
I'm a bigger fan of the Elementalist, though. Lots of good ways to go with him. My preferred is Barrier, Winter's Grasp, Firewall, and Firestorm. Most folks will probably tell you to drop Winter's Grasp for something a little better, like Fire Mine, but I still really like it for its stopping power more than its actual damage. It's nice for stopping an archer mid-draw and freezing someone that just bum-rushed into your face, that sort of thing. Firewall is awesome damage and, depending on where you lay it, nice for some crowd control and corralling the enemy where you want them to go. Firestorm is also fantastic crowd control for keeping enemies on the ground during the duration.
I'd also recommend checking out some of the threads linked in my Unofficial DAIMP Resource Library. It's one of the stickied threads here and there's also a direct link in my signature. ![]()
What platform are you on and what time zone? Listing that would probably help snag you a few forum posters for your friends list that can help you out in-game some time.

I'll just add that you're absolutely correct, gear is the key to DAIMP. A huge number of promotions helps as well, but for you and I, it's gear all the way. A few quick tips on gearing up early on:
1) Open treasure chest rooms. There is a hidden 'chest' score that increases the likelihood of better drops from chests, based on how many chests you've already opened.
2) Buy large chests. Better value for money. If you can't afford a large chest, go get some gold and come back!
3) Keep an eye out for special chests at weekends.
4) Perilous dragon farming. If you find a good group of people who are willing to help you farm perilous dragons for gear, then you're in luck! I had to pug most of mine, hence I still don't have all the dragon weapons.
5) Enter threatening and perilous as soon as you feel comfortable, better xp/time and gold/time. A good group can help, I got carried a lot, I have no shame.
6) Salvage all the crap stuff, because crafting heal on kill/crit chance/crit damage upgrades is glorious.
Also, regarding easier classes:
1) Elementalist. My favourite class, and as DragonRacer said above, an excellent gateway into perilous. I prefer stonefist over winter's grasp, because I like having the extra CC on a short cooldown for those areas that my firestorm spam isn't covering. Also, now that the detonation works as of the latest patch... Gotta use it before it gets nerfed to the ground! It's not as 'optimal' as chaotic focus + fire mine, but it's not as though you need optimal builds to extract.
2) Virtuoso. I like playing a support Zither!, and people seem to appreciate it. I've only ever gotten friend requests from pugs after I've played a support Zither!, and I am terrible at it for the record. It's another great class to jump up in difficulty.
3) Arcane Warrior. If you're pugging and just looking to stay alive in perilous, this is a good way to do that. Drasca's build is what I use, but there are many builds around, all are viable on the mighty AW. He keeps getting nerfed, though, so I expect he won't be good for long.
4) Katari. With the new armour buff, you're good to go!
5) Keeper. As with Virtuoso, but with added CC from static cage (+/- disruption field) instead of buffs. Just don't try to cast barrier on the stairs. The stairs in DAIMP are some sort of wormhole.

I will definitely look into the LFG message board; I myself am playing on PS4.
I do have a couple questions:
Should I make Promoting a priority? As soon as I get a character to level 20 should I promote them?
When should I start thinking about crafting beyond unlocking characters? I have been adding simple runes and the gray armor upgrades, but I'm thinking about crafting upgrades.
Thanks again for the help!

I'm on PS4, so you are welcome to send me a friend request, if you like (DragonRacer13). Best times for availability for me are weekends - sometimes mornings, mostly afternoons. I'm Eastern U.S. time zone.
I recommend promoting. It'll be a little while before you start "feeling" the promotions - by that, I mean when some of the squishier characters (like the rogues) start feeling a little hardier thanks to promoting warriors and giving all your characters more constitution, for example. But promoting helps make all your characters stronger. For example, promoting any warrior gives ALL your characters a boost in constitution, promoting any mage gives ALL your characters a boost in willpower, and promoting any rogue gives ALL your characters a boost in cunning.
I would also recommend going ahead and crafting weapon upgrades, such as hafts and grips and the like. You can always craft better upgrades and replace the old ones (old upgrades are destroyed when you replace with new upgrade, same for runes) as you get better materials.

Agreed with Dragon. Not promoting is kind of a waste. You won't notice it at first, but after your first dozen promotions or so you'll start to see a difference.
And personally i'd try to unlock all characters first. More characters = more ways to play the game. Quick reminder that for crafting armours the tier of the materials you're using really doesn't matter, so save your tier 2 and 3 materials for weapon upgrades where they do matter, and waste your tier 1 materials on armour.
Extra bonus tip: Use a mic. A lot of high level players only bother with routine and threatning to level up their character to perilous or now nightmare levels and thus won't bother with treasure rooms. If you have a mic you can try to convince them that for you treasure rooms are important. I'm sure some will ignore you, but i'm also quite sure others(like me) would be willing to help out.

Also a note on weapons - sometimes, BioWare likes to throw out weekend challenges that involve using certain weapons. I would advise keeping one of each of the following as you get them:
- One-handed sword
- Two-handed greatsword
- One-handed mace
- One-handed axe
- Two-handed greataxe
- Two-handed maul
- Mage staff (doesn't matter what the base element is, such as fire, ice, lightning, or spirit)
- Bow
- Set of daggers
And when I say that, I also recommend only keeping the best/highest damage of each one and salvage the others for materials. For example, let's say you have a greataxe and then you pick up a better greataxe from a chest. I would recommend replacing your two-handed warriors' old greataxe with the new one, then salvage your old one (you can't salvage anything equipped to a character, so that's why I say to switch it out before salvaging). I know that probably sounds like basic common sense, but I also know some folks have a tendency to hoard or to worry about getting rid of some weapons for one reason or another.
The only things the game will not let you salvage are the base starter Inquisition weapons and armors (silly as that is, so you may want to pick and choose which higher-level armors you craft rather than Craft All The Things).

I know I'm repeating some people but ya elementalist, keeper, virt for the barrier
the following skills aren't really weapon dependent
-Barrier
-Firestorm
-Wall of Fire
-Static Cage
-Winter's Grasp (elementalist and necro)
-Most virtuoso songs
As for promotions, at some point the need for gold turns into a need for stats (in function of still attaining an improvement to your performance) though I don't think you are there yet.
In the beginning I just promoted because otherwise the exp would just go to waste right.
Also I think it is still true that threatening is the go to place for beginner gold, perilous is mostly about the exp.
Here's my thread, full of good builds but as a beginner I would definitely recommend the general tips section

would caution against the archer as without heal on kill/hit, the threat problem right now is that often times enemies will bypass front line fighters and go straight for the cute little archer at the back. So it becomes very dangerous very quickly.

One more thing: never, and I mean NEVER EVER EVER use cotton in any form for amour. It is a complete waste and it's the only cloth that provides HOK. 'tis more precious than gold in DAMP.

It seems like there are a lot of builds/classes that depend on HoH/HoK. Do those items drop in one place rather than others? I'm thinking chests versus perilous chest rooms vs dragons etc.
Are there recommendations or guidelines for when it's OK to bring a character into a Perilous PUG? I recall there was something similar for MEMP's gold and Platinum tiers.
Last one, is there a class type whose Promotion bonus I should prioritize first? Con vs Will vs Cunning?
Thanks again! I'm going to try out Elementalist soon because of all the positive feedback!

1. HoH/HoK items would come from chests. Much greater chance, I believe, of getting them from store chests rather than treasure room chests or Perilous dragons, but some people have gotten lucky in both of the latter. RNG is just that... the random number generator, so it's all luck. For what it's worth, I still don't have a HoK ring after 8 months of playing, but I did pick up some weapons that have HoK, so that sort of balances out. However, there are apparently "loot brackets", so the more chests you open, the higher you go in brackets - and the higher in brackets, the better loot you start seeing in chests.
2. I'd say start trying Perilous when you begin to feel that Threatening is more wins than wipes. That'll tell you how your comfort level is as well as how your gear has improved.
3. I'll leave that last one for others wiser than me to answer. My preference is to be less squishy first and foremost, so I've been promoting a lot of warriors... but, I also really like playing warriors a lot, so it became a self-fulfilling thing, really.

Dragon Weapons drop from perilous dragons, and apparently they drop randomly in Nightmare. Dragon Weapons have great HoK but you aren't really rdy for perilous dragons.
I suppose the recommendation for PuG is that you should feel like you can make it across the map without dying more than 3 times (which would increase difficulty for everyone. Threatening should be feeling very comfortable at that point
My philosophy on stats is that you should play whatever you want to play and not go nuts on the farming. Seriously, raising your stats significantly takes forever.
For the arcane there is an exception. It produces willpower and willpower increases the arcane's attack and defense (Fade Shield) at once so the arcane is very self enforcing.

In regard to HoK items, The chests with the highest chance to drop any HoK item are the class chests which are sometimes available during weekends. I played for 6 months without getting a single HoK item and then got almost all of them during 2 class chest weekends.
Also, there are a bunch of Tier 3 weapon upgrades available which provide HoK if you use cotton to craft them. So even if you don't have much luck with getting HoK items you might be able to craft some yourself.
And i agree with Yallergo in regard to promotions. Play whatever class you enjoy. You can always focus on promoting a certain class once your gear gets better, which makes leveling up a whole lot easier.

I see what you mean if you're using them solely for their status effects/CC, barrier strength is greatly effected by the base damage of your staff though. Just something to mention.
