Dragon Weapons drop from perilous dragons, and apparently they drop randomly in Nightmare. Dragon Weapons have great HoK but you aren't really rdy for perilous dragons.

Just as a heads up, since the patch this week purple Dragon weapons are now available in normal store chests as well. I picked up a staff and three daggers on Tuesday.

My advice early on would be to play the class that you have the best weapon for. Until you get decent weapons for other classes.

As far as which stat to promote, from a defensive standpoint its best to promote all stats pretty evenly if you can. They give resistance for different types of damage, with constitution slightly edging the others out because it provides +5hp/point.

From an offensive standpoint Constitution gives you nothing and between cunning and willpower cunning has the edge. It seems it will provide more benefit more quickly up until you are crit capped (200 cunning) than willpower. I am actually going to be working shortly on some maths that will explore this relationship and hope to have more concrete evidence of this soon.

That said, its not worth driving yourself mad playing classes you don't like or happen to fancy at the time just to raise a stat. Play how you feel you want to play and that will keep you playing longer.

One fun thing my friend and I do is play DAIMP roulette...we scroll back and forth through the characters and yell 'stop' and that's the character we play in that game.  It gives you an idea of who you enjoy playing, and can make for some interesting combinations.  (Izzy and Tamar are unstoppable!!!)

This is hugely important: despite great weapons and accs, if you do not understand the game's mechanics, even well geared players can find the game tricky.

Learn the game mechanics:

Enemies - types, their attacks, timing, scripted movement/placement/reactions.

Aggro - how to draw it, how to avoid it - when for both.

Support - if your character is a support type, learn how best to support the team (barrier, well placed wall of fire, winter's grasp etc).

Combos - learn how to inflict status effects with your powers, and in conjuction with other players (ie, paralyze, slow, weaken).

Characters - learn their strengths and weaknesses, and timing for using powers in what order to maximize damage output.

Map cover usage - learn the maps and how to use cover to minimize damage taken while whittling down enemies (one of the biggest fails is often fighting out in the open, taking damage from multiple angles).  also here, learning to draw enemies around a corner or through a choke point in order to control their movement and number of enemies attacking at any given time.

When to, when not to - a great example is reviving teammates.  sometimes it is safe to revive.  other times, if enemies are too close (and/or mucho ranged atacks), you will also be downed before being able to revive.  at times it is best to clutch the wave (solo) rather play romantic hero and die in the process.

Gold! - as a new player it is super important to collect gold from vases and chests to buy chests in the store.  mic up and tell other players you want to collect all the gold since you are new and need it.  some players who have the good stuff will often skip gold, but they have probably forgotten how painful it can be to be a new player with the lowest weapons and accessories.

These are some things to consider, aside from weps, accs, and promotions.  I have seen many a player with good gear, but they lack the strategic understandings mentioned above and often faceplant (and so say 'this character sucks').  It's not the character, but the player who sucks.  Understanding your characters and how to best to utilize them against enemy units is the key (granted, great weps n accs certainly help, but are not the end all be all).

All the best to you OP, and welcome to the DAIMP community.

Combining these two will allow you to teabag your team mates with impunity!

Although extra points are obviously awarded for carrying out this act while under fire.

Again thank you for all the advice! I'm happy to report that Threatening is going well and I found a PUG that carried me through a Perilous Dragon run so that was great! I also got a HoH rare bow and HoK rare 2H from store chests so I'm excited about promoting my Archer and starting a Reaver!

I've stumbled across another question: I've messed up my AW build following an out of date guide, so I'm confronted with the following dilemma: do I respec via promoting or craft that item? I strongly suspect the answer is promotion, so maybe I'm really asking when is it a good idea to craft those respec items?

Again, many thanks!

It depends on how bad you broke it. If you are playable but you took the wrong passive somewhere then go ahead and promote, otherwise, a respec would be in order. It sucks because I imagine at your level, you probably don't have a ton of mats laying around.

I ran into this issue a long time ago before respecs existed and Strength of spirits was bugged to where it drained your barrier quickly. I took SoS and my AW was so bugged it was hardly playable. I had to force myself through promoting it so that I could fix that one point. If it had been available back then I definately would have used a respec item.

Oh shoot, I just realized I've made a HUGE assumption: that your skill tree resets upon Promotion. Is that incorrect?

It is correct after promotion your level one and your skill sets default to level 1 skills.

That is correct. I would only recommend using the respec if you are so badly specced you will likely never get to 20.

So that's me, a clueless noob, messing about in mp for the first time this week. I finally noticed the weekend event thing (how on earth I missed it the previous times.. no clue! Haven't played the sp much though, never even finished it). Ran around, promoted an archer, leveling a reaver now (good fun!) and did some of the weekend event challenges. It lists a bunch of chests as rewards, but I haven't really seen any of those. Had a look at the 'free' tab in the store, but nothing happened there either.

So how does that work? It's a pretty long list of victory/commendation chests, and I sure can use some more mats for unlocking a few more classes :)

Also: read some guides, tried keeper (okay) and legionnaire (meh), unlocked a few more, and must say that apparently I've been missing out. I'll be around a bit more, good fun was had!

And I just wanted to day thanks especially for this post, as it's information that's usually hard to come by and not often passed along to the newbies!

Aha, another question: can I get rid of these weapons that aren't assigned to anyone but say they aren't salvagable?

If it's the starter Inquisition weapons... no, unfortunately. Like the armor, those stay with you forever.
